Plus leatherworkers & shoemakers. You can't resole sneakers or hiking boots, let alone pumps. They're no longer made from materials that will allow that. Back to leather soles and hobnailed boots.

Vimes’ boots theory except it’s both rich and poor would rather throw out their boots every year than resole them because labor cost of resoling and opportunity cost of going to a cobbler and back to pick them up are higher than ordering a new pair to your door. Vimes-Baumol-Amazon prime theory.

ok it does hold with boots specifically though. I buy a pair of New Balance shoes for $50 and they are shot in 3 months. I have a pair of Red Wings that cost $300 I bought 4 years ago and I haven't even had to resole them yet

You can resole Red Wings and Thorogoods. The cheaper ones will have smoked uppers by the time they need a resoling. You don’t really save that much money by buying nice boots.

You can resole Red Wings and Thorogoods. The cheaper ones will have smoked uppers by the time they need a resoling. You don’t really save that much money by buying nice boots.
