How Science Textbooks Treat Scientific Method: A Philosopher's Perspective James Blachowicz
journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1093/...

"this study provides some evidence of gulf that separates philosophy of science from science instruction"

#philosophyofscience #philosophyofeducation #scienceducation
Abstract This paper examines, from the point of view of a philosopher of science, what it is that introductory science textbooks say and do not say about ‘scientific method’. Seventy introductory texts in a variety of natural and social sciences provided the material for this study. The inadequacy of these textbook accounts is apparent in three general areas: (a) the simple empiricist view of science that tends to predominate; (b) the demarcation between scientific and non-scientific inquiry and (c) the avoidance of controversy—in part the consequence of the tendency toward textbook standardization. Most importantly, this study provides some evidence of the gulf that separates philosophy of science from science instruction, and examines some important aspects of the demarcation between science and non-science—an important issue for philosophers, scientists, and science educators.

[open access] Supporting Self-Directed Learning in Science and Technology Beyond the School Years By Léonie J. Rennie, Susan M. Stocklmayer, John K. Gilbert library.oapen.org/bitstream/id...

#philosophyofeducation #selfdirectedlearning #scienceducation
Description While much has been written about science education from pre-K through to postgraduate study, interaction with science and technology does not stop when schooling ends. Moving beyond scholarship on conventional education, this book extends the research and provides an original in-depth look at adult and lifelong learning in science and technology. By identifying the knowledge and skills that individuals need to engage in self-directed learning, the book highlights how educators can best support adult learners beyond the years of formal schooling. Through case studies and empirical analysis, the authors offer a research-based exploration of adults’ self-directed learning and provide tools to support adults’ learning experiences in a wide range of environments while being inclusive of all educational backgrounds.

Hello Ladies & Gentlemen! Recently, we published a fascinating article on the oceans surrounding Cyprus. Cyprus contains a unique ecoregion known as the Cyprus Mediterranean Forests, known for its endemic species, temperate climate, & vast sprawling landscapes. Approximately 128 plants are endemic to these forests, as well as a sub-species of sheep. The island isn’t only diverse in its terrestrial landscapes, & is also highly diverse in its marine landscapes. This is shown in their beautiful sea caves, rocky shorelines, & seagrass meadows.
