Greenwich Mean Time implies the existence of Greenwich Variance Time, Greenwich Skewness Time, and Greenwich Kurtosis Time.
🧪
The "mean" in "Greenwich Mean Time" actually means "mean" (like, average). I did not know this!

To calculate GMT they took the position of the sun throughout the year and averaged it out to find the average solar noon in Greenwich and based the time on that!

why do we care about the expected value of utility (in decision theory) and not the higher moments (variance, skewness, etc)

"Price Gaps and Inflation Dynamics" by Miguel Bandeira, Laura Castillo-Martínez, and Shiyuan Wang.

"...the same monetary policy shock can generate twice the inflationary response, depending on the skewness of price gaps upon impact."

This is a cool exercise and is very related to linear discriminant function analysis. Adding cube terms to the logistic model is related to allowing for skewness in the continuous data model. I'd love to see that formalized.

Kevin Warsh is leaning on the Dallas Fed’s Trimmed Mean Inflation measure (b/c it’s going down) at a time when the Dallas Fed itself is warning that it maybe misleading because it is calibrated to an era of low inflation that we are no longer in

In our new preprint lead by @pietropollo.bsky.social we show how to use meta-analysis to compare not sample means but also kurtosis & skewness, as well as within-group covariance between multiple groups. The era of meta-analyzing whole distributions is here ecoevorxiv.org/repository/v...

Most statistical models focus on a single question: How does an explanatory variable affect the mean response?

But environmental and biological systems are often shaped not only by changes in the mean, but also by changes in variability, skewness, thresholds, and the frequency of extreme outcomes.

Normally, trimmed mean is better than core at predicting headline. But (and this is key) that's only true when the skewness of price changes is negative.

When the skewness flips positive, "the signal from the trimmed mean can be misleading" because this measure drops more prices from the top.

GDP and unemployment don't measure the skewness of income distribution. You can have an economy that looks great by the first two measures, because there's 1000 people, one of which is a billionaire, and the other 999 are wage slaves.

There's also GINI coefficient and COL to factor in.

The Berry-Esseen theorem quantifies how fast the distribution of the sum of independent random variables converges to a normal distribution, as described by the Central Limit Theorem (CLT). It provides an upper bound depending on skewness and sample size. terrytao.wordpress.com/2010/01/05/2...
