Charity shop find: this 1975 reprint of a guide to one of the most magical places in the UK.
On the cover is the New Forest Snakecatcher, Brusher Mills, who made a living by trapping snakes which he sold to London Zoo. He became a local attraction, selling snake skeletons and ointments to tourists.

It's not odd that I'm the last patron of the day, but this time they wouldn't let me out (the front door).
A beautiful 1.1m Red-bellied Black snake was exploring the foyer.
Sadly, the Librarian wouldn't let me near the danger noodle.
The official snakecatcher looked 13. 😟

There are a couple of pubs. Main choices would be the Foresters Arms, the Snakecatcher or the Huntsman (best food). There is also the Pig Brewery just outside Brock at Setley, a micro brewery with a large marquee and does pizzas.

It’s a fish free zone around here, but the garden gets filled with cane toads. So far, seen no snakes at this house, but a snakecatcher told me he’s busy in this suburb. Showed me a bite he got from a big python he grabbed wrong.

as soon as we had the snake confined in the room, blocked off the door, called the snakecatcher etc, I had a shot of whiskey, I was so rattled. Honestly still recovering and it's been over 24 hrs!

Went to Chinatown today and came across this statue that is unambiguously Angida the Snakecatcher (aka Clothsack Arhat), and not Maitreya (aka Clothsack Bodhisattva).
Super cool! You almost never see this—normally, you get conflations between the two, sometimes with the Vietnamese Earth God too.
