Starfleet’s “Gopher” class is my fan-made “proto-vessel” to Deep Space 9’s “Runabout” but in the style of Star Trek: The Original Series.

I imagine this ship was around in Kirk & Spock’s era.

Here is an image of Starfleet’s “Gopher” class vessel; a fan-made “ancestor” to the Deep Space 9 “Runabout” but in the style of Star Trek: The Original Series. I imagine this smaller ship was flying around during the time of Kirk & Spock. Measures: 100’ length 33’ width 27’ height Crew of 10 I’m building the interior too and will share more online in time. I also plan to tell some “Trek Tales” aboard this class of vessel. Design by AJ Fisher. Star Trek: Vortex The Star Trek Deep Space Nine vehicle of choice: The Runabout.

One of the first bits of art I posted to Twitter back in 2022 after making this account there.

The Enterprise-D being so large, I reasoned that it might take a dangerously long time for everyone to reach the lifeboats. This concept shows tall lifeboats spanning multiple decks. [1/2]
Cutaway diagram of the Enterprise-D showing tall but thin lifeboats that reach multiple decks into the ship and can be ejected outwards in an evacuation. All illustrated in the style of the Star Trek Next Generation Technical Manual. The main text reads: Designed to supplement or replace the smaller lifeboats placed around the exterior hull, these core lifeboats would be embedded deeper into the vessel, spanning multiple decks. These would allow the crew and their families to more rapidly reach an emergency evacuation point without having to rely on the turbolifts or potentially walk across a large portion of the ship. The larger core lifeboat pods can be docked in "gaggle mode" with others core pods in addition to standard lifeboats.

Today would've been Walter "Matt" Jefferies' 105th birthday.

60 years after the spaceship he designed along with the entire aesthetic he envisioned first hit TV screens, they continue to inform and inspire #StarTrek production design in every incarnation of Gene Roddenberry's creation to this day.
