We just need to eliminate a couple of stops and streetcars will be much faster!!

It’s amazing how fast streetcars and buses move when there’s no traffic.

Rather uncommon find, a TTC bus route immortalized in a mural. This is only the 2nd such mural I've encountered with a bus on it. Seems this memorialization is not just reserved for streetcars.

Thought, I would have guessed 72 Pape would get such honours.

Up until 2023 Jeff Parish Transit’s E1 bus used to run all the way downtown past the Cemeteries, now people have to transfer from the bus to the streetcar to make that trip so it’s way worse. But a good example of the streetcars being used by real commuters!

for sure, Cemetery Streetcars were bunching so bad this morning

My general impression of the streetcars so far is that while roughly 70% of the right of way is dedicated, New Orleans RTA torpedoes the speed by not implementing TSP or all door boarding and tap to pay.

Apparently! I don’t know much more about it yet, but any city with streetcars/trolleys goes up in my estimation.

When will Toronto fix its streetcars?
Daily 503 bus appreciation post. Here is our bus whizzing past a 504 King streetcar that is crawling across the Queen Viaduct due to a slow zone only for streetcar. It will then have to stop and inspect the points at King before proceeding. Meanwhile the bus has long left the streetcar in the dust.

After the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, Marina Middel School & John Swett Elementary School in the Bay Area (both built to Field Act standards) withstood the shaking and became emergency shelters for displaced residents.

This time he can’t fall back on councillor so assuming he loses he is basically out of public office. Maybe that will free up Chow to be better on transit. Especially the unglamorous work of modernizing streetcars, speeding up buses with priority treatment, and fixing Line 1 track issues at-grade.

I wish I could have shown you the Gifu streetcars of my youth, but they died in 2005. The only surviving specimen is now display piece in front of the station.

We had these in LA when I was a kid, but we called ‘em streetcars.

As a 31 year old with a CS degree, I felt the same way listening to @margaret.bsky.social's episodes about Autistici/Inventati that I do being a transit nerd looking at a map of 1940s San Diego streetcars. We could've had a culture in CS that centers human flourishing. It keeps getting further away.

I think it's been around for a while with the last cohort which were restored in 2011, but maybe hasn't seen much service? Same with the DC and others with the highest car numbers www.streetcar.org/streetcars/1...

TRAINS! TRAINS! TRAINS!

I want both more long-distance passenger rail connecting more cities & more local rail options (commuter trains, streetcars, light rail, etc.)

And as a pedestrian, I have more confidence that rail isn't going to "run a red" than I do that a car won't.
Here is my pitch for anyone who has worries about rail: I think that building out rail is a necessary (but not sufficient) step in transforming American cities from totally car dependent to slightly walkable, in a way that no other form of transit is.
I GOT TO VOTE FOR TRAINS! Fuck yeah Front Range Passenger Rail!

Lol, you think this is weird? I live in a country where Toronto's streetcars constantly do this. As usual, Wien does it more competently with their trams, although I would still prefer to see a floating island here.

You sound very very naive!

Buses use oil, buses use tyres, big business could profit from buses in a way they couldnt from streetcars!

Politics & big money made streetcar companies responsible for repairing streets, & they couldnt increase fares, which meant the streetcars were totally defunded!

Buses. GM wanted to sell buses. The mentality in quite a lot of places at the time was that buses were more modern than streetcars - see the paper linked in the thread the person who tagged me quoted.
