The core d20 pass/fail check mechanics in D&D have always felt bad because they’re extremely swingy and at low levels the die dominates the results.

i think this is accurate and worth thinking about. A D vs D governor's race would all-but guarantee a wipeout of Rs in all the competitive House seats in CA and in a bunch of other swingy downballot races
A vote for Steyer is a vote for Dem vs Dem in Nov. A vote for Becerra boosts Hilton's chance to be second.

There's an election this Tuesday a VERY swingy legislative district of Michigan.
It could erase Dems' majority in the chamber, if GOP flips it.

East NC & south VA. The Mississippi Delta. 4 Corners. Tribal lands in the Plains & Basin. Rural Hawai'i. Most of the entire landmass of Alaska. The deep south's Black Belt.
Southern TX & central CA are swingy but WAY more blue than people think they are.
