fwiw I think Toa's argument has a super lucid & fair version that goes like "we would *rather* there is understanding; this motivates a version of math research that would be primarily translational", which I would imagine is his actual meaning

"I worry about calls to direct research funding primarily toward work with [immediate] applications...The most consequential research is often about what is not obvious. If scientists must know the practical outcome before asking the question, they’ll never ask some of the most important questions."
50 years ago, my colleagues and I pursued basic research science that became revolutionary
“Basic studies led to clinical and translational advances that no one could have predicted,” Robert Gallo writes of his work with interleukin-2.

Daily peanut consumption beneficially affects brain insulin responsiveness, new research finds
A study from the Institute of Nutrition and Translational Research in Metabolism (NUTRIM) at Maastricht University Medical Center in Maastricht, the Netherlands, has found that longer-term consumption of unsalted, skin-roasted peanuts can benefit insulin responsiveness in the brains of older adults.

Fifty years ago, pioneering researcher Robert Gallo and his colleagues pursued basic research science and changed history.

Sometimes you don't know where the work will lead. That, he writes in @statnews.com, is a lesson that should still matter.

A basic-basic-translational trifecta! A discovery in alga leads to a new technology that transforms both neuroscience research and leads to a brand new type of human therapy.

I love that everyone in my feed is smiling this morning.

Congrats, @deisseroth.bsky.social.
BREAKING NEWS
The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel “for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics.”

As a translational scientist, I wouldn't have tools and concepts to play with when developing medicines without weird seemingly esoteric basic research
1. CRISPR came from basic research on bacteria.
2. Optogenetics started with a discovery in algae.
3. The GFP protein comes from jellyfish.
The biggest breakthroughs all trace to scientists following their curiosity, and this is one huge reason why we must keep funding basic research!

William Chi published a paper outlining a method to calculate the economic cost of irreproducible research. In a drug-development scenario, unreliable research can lead to 10-77% of funds being wasted.
