Let's do this #TryMathsLive...
#MathsToday #ALevelMaths

Find the exact value of the green area.
August 28, 2025 at 10:22 AM
Ok let me #TryMathsLive with this from @mathforge.org …
Here's one that I had to double-check because I didn't believe the answer.

Consider a quadrilateral with corners at (0,0), (2,0), (a,b), and (0,2) where (a,b) is such that a, b > 0 and a + b > 2 (this is just to ensure it's convex).

What's its area, in terms of a and b?

Time for a #TryMathsLive!
Without calculating, is 15.99/3.99 greater than 4, less than 4, or equal to 4?

Ok let me #TryMathsLive with this puzzle from @catrionaagg.bsky.social …
What fraction of the triangle is shaded?

In the spirit of @davidkbutler.bsky.social, I shall #trymathslive with this problem.

(I'll even say "maths" instead of "math")
December 5, 2024 at 8:17 PM
I'm going to try that thing where you live-post through (hopefully) solving the problem. What's that called? #MathOutLoud? #RealTimeMath?

1/🧵
consider a subset of the first N positive integers:
S ⊆ {1, ..., N}

call S "mid" if, for every integer n, if n-1 and n+1 are elements of S, then n is in S.

#MathSky 🧮 #iTeachMath ♾️

example: if N=5, the set {2,3,4,5} is a mid subset.

⭐️ find a formula f(N) for the # of mid subsets of {1, ..., N} ⭐️

I don’t usually engage with things that don’t have alt text, but I am nerdsniped by this one. So I will #TryMathsLive on this problem from @ridermeister.bsky.social:
Rationalise the denominator of
1/(√2+√3+√5).
Another early question for new Year 12 FM pupils. This one is intended to show them that mathematics (at A-Level) doesn't really have 'hard' topics, we can make it all 'hard'!

Today's Really Really Cool Thing: Seeing @davidkbutler.bsky.social #TryMathsLive and his "workshop presenting personality" in person 😁

Without calculating, is 15.99/3.99 greater than 4, less than 4, or equal to 4?
February 2, 2026 at 2:41 AM
Well, how about I #TryMathsLive on this problem?
trying to do this question:

"Using proof by induction, prove that x^(2n) - y^(2n) is divisible by (x+y)"

I shall #TryMathsLive with this from @unsolvedmre.bsky.social …
In how many ways can 2025 be written as a sum of two or more consecutive positive integers?
May 11, 2025 at 9:59 PM
I shall #TryMathsLive with this from @stevemaths.bsky.social, but not yet. Maybe in about 8 hours’ time.
(As usual I want no hints please. I want to do it myself.)
Happy Friday 13th.
Here is today's #OCRMathsPuzzle

Arrange the first 16 prime numbers in the grid below (one per cell), so that the sum of each row and the sum of each column equal the given totals.

I haven’t done #TryMathsLive in a while (too busy playing with two-sided ruler constructions), and this from @catrionaagg.bsky.social looks like a good opportunity.
Three regular hexagons. The smallest has area 6. What’s the pink area?

I’m going to #TryMathsLive with the extension problem that @howiehua.bsky.social asked in this video…

May 1, 2026 at 2:22 AM
Ok I really want to #TryMathsLive on this with Green’s Theorem. I have no idea what the kids in A-level maths learn for areas enclosed in parametric curves and I don’t care. I want to use Green’s Theorem.
#MathsToday #ALevelMaths

Here's this week's Monday area problem:

Find the exact value of the green area.
September 23, 2025 at 7:20 AM
#TryMathsLive is amazing, and more mathematicians and math educators should participate!
July 24, 2025 at 1:35 AM
I’m going to #TryMathsLive with this one from @howiehua.bsky.social. Let’s see…
If it takes Elmo 1 1/2 minutes to build a snowman and Rocco takes 2 minutes to build a snowman, how fast can they build a snowman if they work together?
October 4, 2025 at 11:26 PM
I think I will #TryMathsLive on this problem from @catrionaagg.bsky.social
The two blue angles are equal. What’s the size of the orange angle?
March 29, 2026 at 7:38 PM
I shall #TryMathsLive with this puzzle from @catrionaagg.bsky.social, but not straight away. Probably in about 15 hours' time on the train on the way to work, but you never know, it might be sooner.
One of my favourite puzzles for the weekend!

What’s the area of the toppled square?

November 24, 2024 at 5:06 AM
Hmm. I may #TryMathsLive with this problem that @unsolvedmre.bsky.social shared, but only after I've gotten another job done first. So maybe tomorrow morning on the way to work? But possibly even later. We'll see.
Find the radius of the circle.

Ok I want to #TryMathsLive with that last integral from @catrionaagg.bsky.social.

(As usual please don’t help me, even if I ask myself a question. I want to do it myself.)
Y13 did their first set of integration looky-likeys in #MathsToday. Looking forward to lots more of this in the next few weeks!

The last one was a bit mean (I put it there to slow down the fast finishers) but they did manage it when I gave them the right substitution. #ALevelMaths

@davidkbutler.bsky.social this seems like a perfect question for #trymathslive.

I'd do it myself, but I need to go to bed!
The sum of the terms in a particular arithmetic sequence is 75.
If you only sum EVERY OTHER term (starting at and ending on the same terms as before), you get 39.
What is the sum of EVERY THIRD term (again, starting at and ending on the same terms)?

Ooh! Fun. I will do a #TryMathsLive on this from @unsolvedmre.bsky.social ...
Here's a fun Geometry quickie:

A particular polygon has only two distinct interior angle measures: 165° and 166°. How many sides does it have?

Well @segarrogers.bsky.social has put out the challenge, so I have to #TryMathsLive now…
An Ailles Rectangle problem. Find the value of a°.

More an exercise in (trigonometry) language fluency than anything else. i.e. do you know how to interpret the terminology to be able to do it in your head.

A #TryMathsLive just from my own head.
I’m pretty sure that a continuous real-valued function with the rule that f(xy)=f(x)+f(y) has to be a logarithm. And I’m going to attempt to prove it.
