At 15 years old, Rebecca was a highly devout member of the Twelve Tribes— an isolated cult compound that had strict gender roles, extreme corporal pun*shment and high religious expectations. He wrote a 267-page child discipline manual without ever raising a child inside the community. He preached racial doctrine the SPLC has classified as white supremacist. He required followers to surrender everything they owned. And when his own wife allegedly broke the rules that governed everyone else, he reportedly covered it up. Gene Spriggs founded the Twelve Tribes in 1972 and the first Yellow Deli in 1973. In this episode, Tony Brueski examines the man who built an empire of total control from a living room Bible study in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Spriggs was a former carnival worker and guidance counselor on his fourth marriage when he began gathering followers during the Jesus Movement. Within six years, he had six restaurants, a loyal following, and a reputation as a modern-day apostle receiving direct revelation from God. He reportedly banned television, books, outside friendships, and independent thought. He assigned marriages, prohibited divorce, and allegedly forbade interracial unions. Around 2008, the system’s first major internal crack appeared when Marsha Spriggs’ alleged affairs with young disciples became public. Hundreds of members left. The Twelve Tribes survived. Spriggs died in January 2021 at age eighty-three. No successor was named. The communities did not close. The teachings did not change. The Yellow Delis did not shut down. The system he built reportedly outlived him without missing a day of operation. Every cult needs a front door. For the Twelve Tribes, it is a sandwich shop.The Yellow Deli operates at least thirty-three locations worldwide, each one staffed by members of a group the Southern Poverty Law Center classifies as a Christian fundamentalist cult. Workers reportedly receive no paycheck. Their savings were allegedly surrendered upon joining. Their legal names were replaced with Hebrew names chosen by the group. And the restaurants themselves, according to former members and cult researchers, are not businesses in any conventional sense.
