there was apparently genuinely one day when i woke up in my late 20s and decided the TwentyIsPlenty people were right
Nothing like Halloween to radicalize parents about how fast people drive on neighborhood streets.

“the pilot’s goal is to measure the impact of lower speed limits on the safety of local roads.” #fairfaxva #twentyisplenty #safestreets #waroncars https://www.ffxnow.com/2026/10/16/fairfax-county-testing-20-mph-speed-limits-on-10-roads-this-fall/
Ingleside Avenue in McLean with a 25 mph speed limit sign (staff photo by Angela Woolsey) Fairfax County will soon start testing speed limits of 20 mph on select streets, more than two years after local governments in Virginia gained that authority. Starting this fall, speed limits will be lowered from 25 to 20 mph on 10 roads in the Dranesville, Mason and Providence districts, the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) announced yesterday. “Pilot roads were identified by FCDOT in coordination with the Board of Supervisors (BOS) district offices by considering several factors, including pedestrian activity, presence of sidewalks, marked crosswalks and transit stops [and] the presence of schools and other community uses,” FCDOT said. “… FCDOT also sought resident feedback when selecting roads for the study.” The roads included in the pilot study will be: > **Dranesville District:** > > * Douglass Drive from Georgetown Pike to Baron Road > * Baron Road from Randolph Road to Ingleside Avenue (small segment) > * Ingleside Ave from Baron Road to Dolley Madison Boulevard (Route 123) > > > **Mason District:** > > * Patrick Henry Drive from Leesburg Pike to Beachway Drive > * Peace Valley Lane on the west side of Justice High School > * Beachway Drive from Patrick Henry Drive to Nevius Street > * Nevius Street from Leesburg Pike to Beachway Drive > * Blair Road (segment), from Beachway Drive to Glen Carlyn Drive > > > **Providence District:** > > * Flagpole Lane from White Granite Drive to Borge Street > * Bushman Drive from Borge Street to Blake Lane > The finalized list mostly aligns with one that FCDOT presented last December for community feedback. However, two streets proposed in the Hunter Mill District — segments of Glade Drive and Pinecrest Road in Reston — didn’t move forward. According to FCDOT spokesperson Jennifer DeAngelis, Hunter Mill District Supervisor Walter Alcorn’s office opted not to have those Reston roads included in the pilot based on the public input provided late last year. “The survey results did not show sufficient community support for reducing the speed limit to 20 on those roads, so the Hunter Mill BOS office decided not to proceed,” DeAngelis told FFXnow. “However, Hunter Mill may select different pilot roads to take to the community when we do the next round of roads for the Pilot Study.” In addition, officials took into account the Fairfax County Vulnerability Index, which measures socioeconomic disparities based on income, education, housing, transportation and health care access, and other factors. FCDOT didn’t specify a start date for the pilot study, but the new speed limits will be in effect as soon as signs are installed, which could be as soon as next week, DeAngelis says. The Virginia General Assembly granted localities the authority to reduce speed limits on roads in business and residential districts with an existing cap of 25 mph in May 2024. In June, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors gave county staff an official go-ahead to implement a pilot program that’s expected to eventually include streets from all nine magisterial districts. “After the first three pilot zones are installed, FCDOT staff will work with the remaining Board offices to implement pilot study zones in additional districts,” the department said, noting that the pilot’s goal is to measure the impact of lower speed limits on the safety of local roads.

Such good news for everyone, I hope the usual complainers, particularly pro-motorist & political groups along with a certain local news reporter in my area of #Bournemouth, #Christchurch & #Poole, #Conservative take note and start whistling a different tune

Wales’ 20mph speed limit is delivering incredible results:

✅ 100 fewer deaths/serious injuries on 20 & 30mph roads
✅ 35% drop in road casualties (Jul–Sep 2024 vs. same period in 2023)
✅ Lowest casualty rate for this period since 1979

The data is clear: slower speeds save lives.

Visiting London last week, from Soho to Millbank on a lime bike- I was struck by how driver behaviour is different to Sheffield- it’s not only good infrastructure but 20mph that makes a difference and needs widespread roll out across UK #twentyisplenty
London is fast becoming a cycling city. As each new piece in the network appears—which has more than quadrupled from 90 to 431 km since 2016—so do new cyclists. Its infrastructure now sees a stunning 1.5 million daily users—a 43% spike since 2019—moving nearly half as many people as the Tube below.🧵

False

And driving above the speed limit is a direct factor in the likelihood of a road fatality

Speed limit of 25? If your drive 20 you'll only kill someone 10% of the time. Driving 30? Close to 50/50 odds you would kill a pedestrian

ALWAYS DRIVE UNDER THE SPEED LIMIT #TwentyIsPlenty

Pssst Boston drivers, here's one weird trick to get cheaper car insurance: slow down drivers! #TwentyIsPlenty
“The first indications that 20mph zones could bring down the cost of car insurance – as well as cutting speeds and reducing road casualties – came in June last year, when the car insurer Esure reported that vehicle damage claims in Wales fell by a fifth after the default limit was introduced.”

My least popular (and most correct) view is that cars should be automatically limited to the local speed limit. Put the pedal to the floor and you still can't go over 25mph in a residential area.

(15 in Manhattan btw)
There is no possible justification for limiting e-bikes to 15mph but not cars.

Find the number of people who didn’t die in Wales that is demographically correct , photograph them in a church hall under the slogan “Condemned to Death by Reform “

Any good ideas for a unifying hashtag with the discourse around speed and speed limits recently on #bluesky?

Quick ideas off the top of my head

#TwentyisPlenty (already a slogan and a good one!)
I don't think most people understand how our brains have adjusted to the high speeds of driving. What once felt fast feels normal. And thus anything slower feels like unacceptable impediment. It isn't just better insulation and shocks (although it helps - my '84 Volvo *told you* when you hit 60 mph)
