I can not stress this enough:

1) The Telegraph misrepresents our paper (“inactivate within an hour”)

2) They claim this discredits the zero-covid community

3) They ignore our much more impactful follow-up article that contradicts their claim

And here's the actual scientist calling it out.

One of the reasons why I go so hard on science misinformation/disinformation, is that as a working scientist it is frustrating to see your research misreported to push an agenda.

For example, consider this piece of right-wing propaganda from The Telegraph that was just published

To be clear, we do not report what Mattha claims. 95% is not 100%. While most of the virus will be inactivated in an hour, not all. At no point do we say otherwise. To imply that we measured 100% inactivation in an hour is wrong (aka: a lie).

Also, FYI: an hour is a long time.

Wow, thanks so much for making sure to go after the nutty nutcases who don’t like the idea of getting sick over and over with a virus we don’t understand. We appreciate it!

Here’s the author of the paper you cited rightly calling your writing “right wing garbage.”

I spoke to the people who continue to shape their lives around avoiding Covid and only breathing ‘clean’ air

‘Refusing to mask during an ongoing pandemic is absolutely violent and it’s undeniably participating in social murder.’

Not convinced by my comments?

Well then, perhaps you should listen to *the first author of the actual paper*:

To celebrate reaching 500 subscribers on my YouTube channel, I decided to do a “Ask Me Anything About Aerosol, eh” #AMAAAeh. I received a lot of great questions.

My YouTube channel has reached 500 subscribers!

This is very much appreciated.

To celebrate, I’m going to make my next video a #AMAAA,eh (Ask Me Anything About Aerosol, eh).

holy, hell man, have some respect for your profession!

the first author of a paper you cite characterized your piece as misinfo/disinfo on this very site. it’s been nearly a full day now, and no apology, let alone response?

address it! have your rag issue a correction!

If you're interested in the discussion around plume dynamics, I wrote a thread about it here that goes into a little bit deeper.

I received this question, and thought maybe other might have it as well. I thought the easiest way to answer would be to put together a short thread.

Do things like high ceilings or open back doors matter? It's basically a theater setup -- stage up front, open doors in the back. And would the risk be primarily if you're unlucky enough to be within X radius of someone or does it normalize across the space? (I'll N95 but deciding where to stand)

Dr. Allen Haddrell @ukhadds.bsky.social posted on @bsky.app to debunk @telegraph.co.uk misinterpreting his research published in the Royal Society Journal: bsky.app/profile/ukha... 🧵

Yep. A PhD student uses them during exhalation aerosol measurements. Those are very sensitive measurements to make, so the air needs to be extremely clean (no background).

Particulate air pollution has been a problem since we lived in caves.

It took us to the 1990s to figure out why.

The story of how people figured out how air pollution affects us is a long, but interesting, one.

There's a lot of confusion surrounding how humidity affects the spread of Covid-19. Why is this? In my latest explainer video, I discuss what is known, and not known.

Physical interventions will lead to this. I wrote a thread about a paper that discussed this last year.

In short, the estimate of ACH is rarely accurate everywhere in a built space. The average may be correct, but each location can be wildly different.

bsky.app/profile/ukha...
CO2 monitors have become popular tools people can use to estimate their indoor air quality.

A new study was recently published that looks into how we can use them to optimise occupancy thresholds and identify problem locations.

Actual practical science!!!

Like particulate matter, asbestos can’t be processed by a macrophage. What makes asbestos unusually harmful is the fiber’s rod-like shape. Often, the rod is too long for a macrophage to fully engulf, leading to the macrophage being impaled.
