Uridine
Uridine is a pyrimidine nucleoside composed of an uracil base and a ribose sugar. In cells, uridine is predominantly present in RNA (as uridine monophosphate, UMP). Uridine can be produced through de ...

Certain forms of pancreatic cancer, for example, rely on uridine when glucose is scarce.

So, they programmed the fat to eat just uridine, and they easily outcompeted these pancreatic cancer cells. This suggests that fat could be adapted to any cancer's dietary preferences.

🧬 In 1995, Katalin Karikó was demoted at UPenn because her grants weren't landing and her papers weren't cited. The mRNA chemistry she developed over the next 20 years (modifying uridine to pseudouridine) became the COVID-19 vaccines and the 2023 Nobel Prize.

'Our findings delineate a novel metabolic-immunological axis by demonstrating that uridine acts as a key modulator to potentiate IFN-γ secretion in CD8+ T cells. This enhancement is mechanistically driven by uridine’s role in promoting the N-glycosylation of CD45'

Check this out: we designed "U-ramp" reporters with entirely synthetic 3’ UTRs by varying in their uridine content (20% to 45%). The result was striking: U-density behaves like a threshold—below ~30% U, barely any piRNAs; above it, output shoots up in a Yb-dependent manner. (7/19)
