theres this veblen book about how the problem with america is Absentee Ownership,
I've written about the overarching post story, causes, underlying pattern. But the failure of Lewis or Bezos to even show up, literally or figuratively, on a day of devastating cuts epitomizes the profound lack of character and accountability that is so common place today within the American elite.

it's funny how accurate this book is about understanding the discourse about doordash

Veblen Good survives taxation, shock
DfE pupil data is out today and shows that the number of private school pupils has dropped 5.6% since VAT was introduced.

Not 25% like the independent schools council predicted. Or the 50% we saw in some right-wing papers.

5.6%.

It’s Veblen, all the way down. Luxuries are most luxurious when denied to others.

Veblen is someone who's being recognized more and more
the tech industry mania for internal LLMs and job cuts was driven not by revenue fundamdentals or the end of ZIRP but management radicalism against their employees
I think a lot of CEOs are going to do what DOGE is doing on their workforces after years of hiring and competing for workers. Individually their animal spirits are going to be about cutting labor in an effort to maximize earnings, assuming that their firms are inefficient and bloated.

Veblen talked a lot about lawns as conspicuous waste, and that remains the best analysis of lawns ever.

Me:Hey chat I’m developing a new theory of the leisure class!

Chat: is it a new theory of the leisure class or just Veblen and Bourdieu again?

Me: *hangs head* Veblen and Bourdieu again.

RIP Thorstein Veblen you'd have hated this shit.
How about this explanation… even for folks doing reasonably well in this strange economy, they can see the worst people in the world just raking in money in the ugliest of ways, and they know they’ll never be able to compete with that, and that their money will be worth less and less over time.

Vimes vs. Veblen
The Vimes Boots Theory has been running up hard against "are these boots $200 because they're built right, or is that purely a brand positioning thing and they're made of the same 1mm-thick fake leather as the $50 ones"

On a related note, can anyone think of a Veblen good/service more Veblen than fin dommes?

It makes Games Workshop and Rolex look like commodity sellers by comparison.
To be fair, someone whose entire career is selling possibly the most Veblen of all Veblen goods might have a hard time understanding how relatively normal goods work.

Who’s afraid of Thorstein Veblen?
I do want to shout-out my fellow sociologists, who have collectively created a discipline so woke that not a single one of our introductory textbooks can make it past Florida's censors.

Great work everyone.
