Plant metabolites released by a growing plant, as well as those released during the decomposition of plant litter can: (i) directly affect the roots and performance of a responding plant; (ii) recruit root-associated microbiota that subsequently colonize responding plant roots and alter their performance; (iii) recruit root-associated microbiota that produce secondary metabolites directly influencing responding plant roots; and (iv) support root-associated microbiota that release secondary metabolites attracting or repelling other soil microbes, which indirectly modify the growth and defense of the responding plant."
