I would humbly submit that conservative media and conservative churches are branches from the same tree, funded by similar rich wildcatters (whether from data or oil)
We put too much blame on conservative media, to the exclusion of conservative churches, for our current nightmare.
It took no more than two generations of ultra-politicized religion to destroy the basic political compromises that kept the Republic secure.

I’d argue this is a big part of it but frankly I’d put more blame on conservative churches for adopting what is empirically one of the most self-destructive (and other-destructive) ministries ever adopted (ie politics-first conservative Christianity).

This is one of the general trends running back decades, and more than 50% of it can be ascribed to “which type of oil wealth you depended on.” Liberal institutions were buoyed by Rockefellers, to non-ideological/social uplift purposes. Wildcatters in TX and CA have funded the loons. For a century.
Seems like a problem that most every smart liberal and left wing writer, researcher, analyst, and NGO worker I know is unemployed, grossly underpaid, or in a super unstable job, while a bunch of 20 year old Nazis with the talent and expertise of ass hair are getting paid $300K to post on Twitter.

I used to work in haz waste in oil country - we could get multinationals to agree to cleanup with one firm letter but the family owned companies and wildcatters were a nightmare.
