WinRT isn't really a place where things live, it's just a different style of API, the same component can and often does expose both Win32 and WinRT APIs (so they then both live in the same DLL). However like with COM there is some infrastructure that WinRT APIs depend on

So they'd have to reimplement that infrastructure before reimplementing any WinRT API (not sure where Wine is on this)

Step 1: combine the shims. Mostly done.
Step 2: replicate the C# layer in C++/WinRT. Mapping that out.
Step 3: integrate and remove the shim[s].
Step 4: reduce and optimize.

How well does it run on a WinRT device?

So many, many little things that "do the job" but are clearly student project-level work - and long-since abandonware in the bargain.

Which is why I'm working on rewriting a project combining baroque C# and TWO C-flavored C++ shims into pure C++(/WinRT, because that's the only non-CLR option.)

I think the thing is that it lives in WinRT and not Win32.

🧠 C++/WinRT access specifiers hit differently.

Implemented interface = public 🌎
- public = module-internal 📦
- protected = derived types
- private = same class 🔐

The Old New Thing explains why.

I'm not sure. I think maybe WinRT is mostly built on top of Win32 so you can just run the original library but it probably has some kind of custom hooks into hardware drivers to find out there is support for secure storage, and probably on emulation that won't be there so it will be disabled maybe?

The UI has existed for decades and it really hasn't gotten a whole lot of love over the years. The last major overhaul was in the Windows 8 era when we built out Integrity Level-aware WinRT APIs that lived on top of the underlying Cred APIs.

Love the dream world Microsoft are trying to create where all the UWP and WinRT API docs are written as if Win32 no longer exists, despite it still being the only sane API to use and the one all good Windows software is still written for.

similarly, if it doesn’t work on my XP retro rig and you listed “any horseperating system” under operating system compatibility, only for me to learn you only tested it on Windows 10 and the binary calls the WinRT API for toast notifications, then you just wasted my evening on troubleshooting
