Wild we still have another three years of Howard era cabinet papers to be released.

Workchoices years will be fun for them.

Also the less of 2004 is not don’t do anything bold. It’s don’t do anything bold that the entire electorate hates (WorkChoices)

Be bold with GOOD things!
The comparison with 2004-07 is fine… except in 2004 (and 2001) the ALP hadn’t lost its most experienced and electable potential leaders.

The list of Libs gone in 2022 and 2025 who would have been front bench/ leaders is pretty long

Just watched an ancient looking John Howard on 9 News still asserting that Workchoices was the right policy in 2005 Keep telling yourself that you silly old coot. Lying to the grave.

ICYMI: the National Archives released records from 2005 detailing the discussions around WorkChoices...

The Libs have a history of trying to strip away workers' rights, but union members won't let WorkChoices 2.0 happen.

We're watching you Sussan Ley 🕵🏾♀️

And for the love of his do not listen to anyone who says “yeah but look what happened when Howard was bold and he did WorkChoices”

Are you saying things the ALP should do are bad like that?!

FFS you think dental in Medicare will be hated? Real spending on public education will be hated?

Taylor announces the reintroduction of "WorkChoicesIII" to control 'criminal' unionists.
I didn't expect THAT! #FFS!

WorkChoices bastard.

Inflicted his religion on those who wanted to die with dignity.

Inflicted his religion on those who hoped for better health via stem cell treatments.

Inflicting suffering on others to improve his afterlife experience. I hope he had one moment of knowing it was all a lie.

Bolt, trying to prove Dutton types can be "successful", cites ... John Howard & (cough) Tony Abbott.

Andy, the Mad Monk lasted less than 2 years as PM. And Howard spent his first decade avoiding hard right stuff to keep the punters "relaxed & comfortable".

Then he tried WorkChoices on. Game Over.

I was in my late teens/early 20s during his rein. Workchoices changed the employment landscape. He forever changed the attitude toward asylum seekers. The media landscape changed, media begun actively being a spokesperson for his government (eg the interview that led to the intervention & Tampa)

Over the years, WorkChoices has become shorthand for policy disaster. It forever changed the political landscape on industrial relations reform.
WorkChoices helped end John Howard’s leadership. The policy’s ghost still haunts the Liberals

Cabinet papers 2005: WorkChoices, Afghanistan and climate change take centre stage
In 2005, the Howard government introduced its controversial WorkChoices legislation. It would be a key factor in the government’s defeat in the 2007 election.

Hagiography about a bloke whose contributions to public life were messing with other peoples reproductive and end of life choices, WorkChoices, throwing people off the DSP and expanding work for the dole. Spare us.

Welcome back to the Industrial revolution when workers were considered collateral damage for "progress"
Howard's Workchoices and the ALP failure to address what industrial awards achieved prior to Workchoices have landed us here.

Howard was always a small minded man seeking stature. Workchoices? His tragic example of what he sought to achieve when he had power. Can’t help thinking his pathetic ego is in play here - he doesn’t want anyone else being credited with gun reforms. For our under 40’s: John Who? He is irrelevant.

Why is she trying to lash herself to WorkChoices 2? Has something changed such that this is likely to be a tactically wise move for her?

I love how Ita has trashed her own reputation, I was never a fan especially after she was out there supporting #workchoices saying that yes as 16yr girl old she could negotiate her wages with a boss 🙄

Having been involved in IR since the 90s the Coalition are still reliably out of step with what most Australians want workplace laws to do. Every instinct they have is bad. The only lesson they learnt from the WorkChoices debacle was "don't get caught doing it all at once."

Workchoices... god damn.

Workplace Relations Minister Joe Hockey says he makes no apologies for spending $121 million advertising the Government's WorkChoices legislation.

Not really, we got WorkChoices and a borked tax system from his Senate majority. It was a catastrophe.

Apparently, the party which brought us Workchoices and Robodebt now cares about ordinary people.
February 15, 2026 at 1:43 AM
It really is crazy - just imagine if Howard sprung Workchoices on everyone one morning, rammed it through parliament within 24 hours and the whole thing was out of the news cycle within the week because by then he'd both started the 'intervention' and ...
