In Ireland it's #WrenDay, when "wren-boys" go from house to house, carrying a holly bush adorned with figures of birds, singing:
"The wren, the wren, the king of all birds,
#StStephensDay was caught in the furze,
Although he is little, his family's great,
I pray you, good landlady, give us a treat."

Chaitheamar an Nollag in iarthar Chiarraí (Fionn Trá) cúpla uair agus bhí Lá an Dreoilín iontach ar fad. Ní fhaca mé a leithéid riamh roimhe sin!

In UK its Boxing Day, when tradesmen and servants got their Christmas box.

Nothing like that for agricultural labourers. Interesting to see this #WrenDay in Suffolk to fill that gap.

The day after Christmas.

St Stephen's Day (the day on which Good King Wenceslas looked out).

And also Lá an Dreoilín, Wren Day.

This little guy, spotted recently, will be left to enjoy the day in peace!

Among yellow autumn leaves, a wren darts. A small round body, short beak and a darker stripe back from its eye.

#Dec25Challenge Dec 3: Wren Day Hunt (Irish precursor) — The wren, the king of winter, is sought in hedge and thorn.

A costumed figure runs along a damp street during a bustling winter festival. His clothing is a layered patchwork of frayed fabrics in muted browns and greens. Torn trousers bunch at the knees, and a tattered coat hangs unevenly from his frame. Straw and reeds are tied around his boots and ankles, flaring with each stride. His face is painted pale with darkened creases that deepen his gaunt, expressive features, and long, disordered hair spills from beneath a battered hat adorned with leaves, twigs, and small feathers. He grips two messy bundles of green branches and thin sticks, clutched close as he moves. Behind him, storefronts painted in warm reds, yellows, greens, and purples create a bright backdrop. Winter greenery and wreaths hang above doors and windows, framing the crowd of bundled onlookers who blur into the background. The scene feels cold, bustling, and celebratory, capturing the folkloric energy of Wren Day in motion. The wren’s lost his crown
In the thorns and the fern.
Now redbreast is king,
And spring will return!

But where is the wren?
Where is Dreoilín?
He flies through the bushes,
Doesn’t want to be seen.
