I love C! let's continue writing all software that's vital for security in it!

ai in most shit is just bad slop, but people who recognize that in their field like writing and visual art don't have a good view on what's going on in software, they are a million miles departed, what's going on in software is vastly worse, a wreathing leviathan is trying to pull itself together

If you're incapable of learning and implementing something this absolutely fundamental you shouldn't be writing user-facing software. Or possibly any software.

A lot of people use software in their jobs, but vanishingly few have control over the software they use. So AI's ability to produce bespoke tools for those who use it is really limited to that tiny subset.

Also, writing code is a small part of even developers' jobs. Mostly it's comms and management
Someone on here told me that more jobs are like software development than the people doing those jobs appreciates. And I wonder anew who are these people and have they ever left the house
Two things are true:

1. Claims about AI capabilities are overblown
2. AI has completely revolutionized software development, and will do the same to many other fields

I'm a software developer by trade. I'm going to attempt to explain what this revolution feels like "from the inside".

Having named my new HPLC "Maverick" in September, I am writing a proposal called "GOOSE" and developing a software package called "ICEMAN" now.

It's a bit out of hand.

> Everyone is saying that AI is writing all this great software. Where is all the great software? Really, where?
(aus einem Hacker News-Thread)

… ist tatsächlich eine Frage, die ich intellektuell nicht bewältigt bekomme.

We're all bad at writing software: blog.senko.net/were-all-bad...

The story of ParticleDB is the story of natural stupidity, not artificial intelligence.
We're all bad at writing software
After several discussions with fellow software developers about whether we could truly "let go" and trust LLM-generated code, and a high-...

I did like it! I think it’d be a great role for anyone looking to move from software dev and into writing full time.

went to sleep honestly really depressed and annoyed at ai in kink spaces.

And it went on to thoughts about how llms are just spam machines. Spam in art. Spam in writing. Spam and inaccuracies in transcription. Spam in software.

So much fucking spam in programming.
Depressing.

That is @ellipsus.com, which is my primary writing software now.

This goes for ALL mediums, from writing, 2D art, VP.. Everything!! I keep seeing ads for AI 3D shit & it drives me crazy that I cried actual tears learning Blender.. more than once.. and people are just feeding images into some bs software to create 3D models.. No skill involved.

Software engineering is not and never was about writing code, it was about creating software.

This often includes writing code, but that's means to an end, not the goal.

And those who get into SE to write code, tend get stuck as a permanent junior, unable to figure out what's wrong.

Their mindset

I would gladly return to writing hella cool DoD software, but I'm an expensive boy with expensive habits
Banging my drum again: if you want less freaks in politics we should make running for and holding office not the worst job imaginable.
I run into sharp people in professional situations all the time and it's simultaneously encouraging and depressing. What are you doing here you should be running things

The Washington County Sheriff's Office is expanding its use of AI to write police reports to all crimes now in its test group. Likely only a matter of time before that entire police force is using Axon's DraftOne program.

I spent 5 years writing meter reading and shopping delivery software on Windows CE :)

I like this thread a lot because of how well it illustrates that the process of problem solving in software dev to which LLMs are well-suited is totally inappropriate for most other problems because almost nothing else in life is like writing and fixing code.
Two things are true:

1. Claims about AI capabilities are overblown
2. AI has completely revolutionized software development, and will do the same to many other fields

Deeply disappointed to see Vellum caving to the AI nonsense.

@vellum180g.bsky.social you need to do better. You were such good software, too.

Good software development is mostly engineering: Requirements- and metric driven with some aesthetics sprinkled in.
Writing code - which is something different - is way more about the artisanship and self-expression.

Code is closer to art that software usually is.

Directing personal insults towards us because we've criticized the increasing authoritarian and anti-privacy behavior in these countries including towards GrapheneOS is appalling. Alexey Pertsev is in prison in the Netherlands for writing open source privacy software. You're denying reality.

This is a useful post that looks at the impact of AI on development, but applied within the context of working to the GOV.UK service standard puntofisso.net/blog/posts/a...
Does AI speed up development? Using the GDS Service Standard as a testing ground
Does AI speed up software development, especially in a digital service context? My thesis is that it doesn’t: modern software development is about much more than writing code, which AI does speed up. ...

You also cannot trust agents made by humans, that’s just kicking the can down the road

We’re going to need several generations of AI removed from primitive primate fuckery before we have someone capable of writing Real Software
