I a just old enough to remember what the aftermath of 9/11 was like, and even then a member of the Bush administration saying something this Islamophobic would have been unthinkable. Sure they still thought these things but getting rid of the norms that kept them from saying it has been awful.

A 2025 Nobel Prize winner in chemistry, Omar Yaghi is the son of Palestinian refugees who grew up in Jordan.
He just left the US to move to China after raising concerns about rising anti-immigrant sentiment, like the kind shown here. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/china-than...
Before he received the Nobel Prize, Yaghi described his concern about the destructive nature of Trump’s policies to American innovation. I think it’s regrettable. We’ve learned over and over in human civilization that scholars can move across borders. This is how knowledge spread and how vast regions of the world lifted themselves out of poverty….We have to know that people coming from different backgrounds improve the level for everybody involved. That’s an amazing story. Great thinkers can improve not only the U.S. but the world.
