My dad, who would be 91 now, experienced a decent job market in engineering but even then, the pay was low in constant dollars on top of some still tough barriers. And this would be the perceived mid 1950s post war boom.

When we talk about the costs that LLMs impose on society we should not forget the fact that nothing works anymore because everyone is so scared of getting their shit scraped.

Every now & then we get a paper that argues preventing ecosystem degradation is more effective - in terms of cost &/or ecological benefits - than restoring ecosystems

This is so obvious; why is it seen as debatable?

But it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t put effort into restoring degraded ecosystems
