#phoneticians, could we please have a moratorium on studies reporting on #VOT? Pretty, please with sugar on top! Just because #VOT is easy to measure doesn't mean we should measure it...

Mermelstein (1967); Schroeder (1967) provided ways of estimating the vocal tract transfer transfer function from tube models by looking into the anti-symmetric Fourier coefficients of the formants for open-close tubes. 50 years hence, our most important contribution is everyone measuring #VOT 🤦

Coming soon: Big Team Science in the Language Science, our take on BTS in a field that, at its core, theoretically cares for cross-cultural differences.

We at @manylanguagesc.bsky.social are working on a few BTS projects and yes, BTS in linguistics is really difficult.

Big Team Science for language science: opportunities and challenges
Abstract: The present paper advocates for incorporating Big Team Science practices into the language sciences. Big Team Science is a promising mode of collaborative research in which top-down coordination directs efforts by a large number of researchers from different institutions towards a common scientific goal. The redistribution of resources and division of labor enabled by Big Team Science may enable researchers to increase methodological rigor, systematically explore claims across a wider sample of languages, and to diversify both the languages studied and the researchers engaged. However, implementing Big Team Science practices is not without challenges, some of which are unique to the language sciences. We suggest strategies and best practices for adapting to these challenges, including theoretical and methodological pluralism, variation in conditions among data collection sites, and navigating a trade-off between maximizing methodological rigor and ability to engage with the most inclusive, typologically broad language samples.

Never understood the logic of prevoicing.Only makes sense if our perspective on voicing comes from languages with 2-way contrasts. Arguably, the burst is the vantage point for laryngeal contrasts. This could easily be amended if 4-way laryngeal contrasts provided the perspective. #phonetics #voicing

I know there is a 2015 study by Fort etal that shows that consonants are more important than vowels in the #kikibouba effect but are there any recent studies that show some interaction? Or gradience @timoroettger.bsky.social @bodowinter.bsky.social

One of the major extrinsic hurdles to increasing outreach for @manylanguagesc.bsky.social has been structural and institutional requirements for potential collaborators to be `first authors' and/or 'last authors' for them to even be considered candidates for positions.

The difficulty of measuring #intensity and the ease of measuring #duration perhaps is the reason why so many contrasts rely heavily on #duration, despite its infeasibility as a stable cue across contexts #unpopularopinion

#phonetician friends, what's the phenomenon when a speaker is not expected to speak a language and despite close to native pronunciation, native speakers mishear them? Or ask them to repeat themselves.
