The Barcelona Collaboratorium for Modelling & Predictive Biology is a joint initiative by @crg.eu & @embl.org, exploring biology's frontiers with computational and theoretical modeling to make systems predictable & controllable.
Jordi García-Ojalvo explored today how both multicellular organisms and simpler life forms such as bacteria use collective strategies to respond to their environment, that is a compelling perspective on the fundamental principles of living systems.

Welcome back to the Collaboratorium!

Out now in PLOS Computational Biology 🧬

We have an established theoretical framework for genotype–phenotype (GP) maps, describing their structural features and how those features shape evolution. But much of this assumes one discrete phenotype per genotype - which is often not true.

Kye Hunter and @n-martin.bsky.social from the Collaboratorium have some results to share!

Access this preprint: "Using a simplified Rough Mount Fuji model to disentangle how multi-peaked fitness landscapes can be highly navigable"
🧵 New preprint: doi.org/10.64898/202...

In 2023, Papkou et al. reported an empirical fitness landscape with a striking property: >500 local optima ("peaks"), spanning both high and low fitness.

Despite this ruggedness, >75% of simulated adaptive walks reached the top ~14% of peaks.
