As previously, hanging on by my fingernails, not really knowing how, but seemingly reasonably effectively. Intolerant of people who don't understand the difference between climate and weather but claim otherwise. A fan of long-tail transportation devices.
Oh. Yes.

You can't really argue with this as an explanation of where it's all gone wrong.

Reading this and thinking of the reports from recipients of these books. They almost universally refer to the _arrival of the book in the post_ as being a critical part of the experience. Experiences don't have to be particularly dramatic to be valuable.

That feeling when, after a week of the RDs trying to politely explain to a parkrunner that, no, you aren't going to remove someone's time even if they are aggrieved and think that person cut the course short. And then they paste the complaint into _the entire parkrun group chat_. Oh.😆

See also UK politics after Brexit. US politics is welcome to look over to this side of the Atlantic to try to learn some lessons, but I can't promise that there's much useful there to gain any insights from. (Apart from maybe that pretending the elephant isn't in the room doesn't work very well.)
I fundamentally do not know how to square the politics whereby Democrats will essentially have to tell the American people that because they (the voters) made an extremely stupid decision, they need to lower their expectations substantially for the foreseeable future, but here we are.

Sneezing postboxes identified as suffering from allergy to envelopes.

Spotted in West London and thought it was unusual enough to post. Apparently it is a Penfold design from Victorian times.

A driving license should expire automatically after five years. Renewal is subject to completing further tests.
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?

Questions to which the answer is "No." (For all kinds of reasons, but that the research being done there is not important is not one of them.)

I get this. But this is the FDA that they are messing with. There's fucking about with a few recreactional drugs at home and there's _fucking about with the regulator that most of the world's medical regulatory agencies look up to_.
in the same way that the best way to reduce overdose and addiction wrt recreational drug use is to address the root causes and create safer avenues, not ban it,

sometimes you do just have to let people do stupid shit to their own selves

They haven't formulated the assumptions correctly. With or without the effects of gravity? Taking account (or not) of air resistance? Being allowed to first squash it into a crumby doughy ball and throw it like a shot? All important considerations.
Finally, someone asking the important questions

I am so moved by the Ravens: their obvious affection for one another, how they raise a family, how they just soar & tumble having fun. I am biased but I can’t think of another species of bird so complex & interesting! Listen to their little chortles this morning How can you not love them! 😁

We have such a _german_ son. "Can you [do x] please?" "Yes, I can." _wanders off_.

Just in case there was any uncertainty about who is expected to drink the beer in this country.

A consultancy on helping small businesses understand how not-actually-very-hard (provided you're not up to anything actually bad) global data privacy laws are and that compliance does actually make people's lives better. So it is worth at least _trying_.
Take a break from the discourse and quote this with a business you would want to start if you could afford to lose money on it

Schools here (Germany) have v. short days. On Fridays No.1 child gets herself to the local library where there's a brilliant working area. She finishes all homework while I finish at work-work before the weekend starts, leaving the whole weekend for doing more fun stuff. #librariesChangeLives
I did this on Twitter years ago and got some amazing answers. Let's see if we can get #LibrariesChangeLives trending and show what amazing things can grow from properly funded public services and the value of providing free access to books, reading and educational resources for all.
Tonight's positivity, let's all give a bit of love to libraries #Libraries

Stu is spot on here, they save lives, I was saved by my local library and Librarians, how about you?

Ruth. Then my family moved house a week after my due date (a week before I mad an appearance) and the girl who lived in the house opposite and who was 3 days older than my older sister and who was _immediately_ best buddy was called... Ruth.
Introduce yourself with the name your parents almost gave you: Angharad. Which is a lovely Welsh name but I am quite sure that it would have been a massive millstone growing up in the US and Canada in the 70s where none of the kids in the playground would know how to pronounce it.
Introduce yourself with the name your parents almost gave you:

Gwendoline

When I changed my given name 20 years ago, my father was APPALLED that I hadn't named myself Rebecca, a name he discovered in the family tree 30 years after I was born. He's not spoken to me since.

I think people are seeing too much nuance in all this. Whether individually these men (mostly, but not all were men) wanted to have sex with minors is besides the point. They wanted their Wants to be fulfilled and didn't believe that any moral or legal rules applied to them. 1/
I'll add one thing: The Epstein files show he was a fully accepted, integrated part of the billionaire class culture.

That's important NOT bc pedophilia binds that class together but bc THEY THEMSELVES understand his crimes to be of a piece with the abuse, domination, and impunity they practice.
This class of men, including Epstein, were naturally drawn to far right populism as a way to fight growing calls for accountability.

They supported and inflated the far right wherever they could, and Epstein was part of it.

Kids: "We're going to the park to go play on the _frozen lake_. Bye." OK. I guess. (I mean there's a whole bunch of 70+ yrlds repeatedly chucking heavy things around on it, so all my childhood training re icy ponds is pretty much useless in judging this situation.)
