Far-UVC. What is it? How does it inactivate airborne pathogens? Will it give you sunburns? If not, why not? And if they work, why aren't they everywhere?

In my latest explainer video I dive into all these questions and try to make some sense of it all.

This clip from parliament yesterday is absolutely gobsmacking. Our minister of Science, Innovation, and Technology hopes she believes in science.
Excellent speech by Reuben Davidson (L) yesterday. Full transcript in the video description.

cognitive point of view. So, with all due respect, your framing is wrong: the question is not why we didn't debate about keeping schools open, but how we can reduce the spread of all airborne illness in school settings, on a permanent basis. See the amazing work of @safeairschoolsuk.bsky.social! /3

With highly-pathogenic avian influenza now in NZ, we're taking steps to protect #kakapo and #takahe by vaccinating against the disease, following a successful trial. We're aiming for ~90 kākāpō and 100 takahē in an initial phase to protect the most valuable birds/sites. #conservation #birds

Haven't seen this shared, but it's a great one by a giant in the field, Trevor Bedford. Finds that fastest SARS-2 fitness growth was 2021 to mid-2022. Since then there's been a steady rate of evolution ("fitness flux") >4x faster than H3N2 flu A, a benchmark for rapidly evolving RNA viruses.

Looks like roughly 3% of the cohort have had symptomatic covid since late April.

MB-32, a small molecule that targets the ACE2 receptor, gave SARS-CoV-2-infected mice a 100% survival rate while untreated mice succumbed. Its exact interaction with ACE2 still needs further characterization. doi.org/hb8p7n
Small-molecule antiviral drug targets ACE2 receptor to block coronaviruses from entering cells
The ongoing evolution of SARS-CoV-2, particularly the rapid emergence of the omicron variant and its sublineages, has weakened the effectiveness of existing vaccines and antiviral drugs, underscoring the potential risk of future coronavirus pandemics.
