We have the means to resist pressure and would benefit from doing so, but lack political leaders.

Not to Palantir

The EU Kids Act arrived without an impact assessment. Asha Allen of CDT Europe writes that a law with far-reaching fundamental rights implications cannot be shaped outside democratic due process.
A Safer Internet Should Not Come with Democratic Shortcuts
EU's push for a safer internet for children must not come at the expense of the democratic scrutiny needed to get digital regulation right, writes Asha Allen.

The left has to combat this fear head on by showing that decline is not inevitable.

This is precisely why hundreds of experts demanded that during Ireland's presidency of the EU our country not be allowed to handle tech policy.

Ireland is the trojan horse for US Big Tech lawlessness in the EU. It's really as simple as that.
This is insanity.
Irish Presidency's draft text of amendments to the GDPR allows training & operation of any AI without safeguards & tough legal basis (under "legitimate interest" a company claims what it is doing is OK. Up to you to find out and challenge in court). This is a free pass for US Tech.

Great to see the EU's Digital Markets Act in action 👏. But let's be honest, the fine is pocket change and the behavioural remedies are nice to haves but hardly groundbreaking.

To put the fine in context, Alphabet just disclosed its going to spank *$205bn* on AI this year alone.
⚠️ We have fined Google €890 million for breaching the Digital Markets Act, by promoting their own services and restricting customer access to alternatives on Google Search and Google Play.

The EU wants to fast-track data centre "acceleration zones" across all Member States.

⚠️ But our analysis shows that those data centres will remain largely owned by and serving US companies, while draining European resources and escaping public scrutiny.
