Update: I’m looking for a recording of a singspiel (Hiller’s Die Jagd, in 1769) that the textbook swears was a huge hit and that everyone knew this one lied from it in particular. Best I have is a live video recording of an outdoor performance on YouTube, in Latvian.
I’ve taught 18th century music surveys so many times in my life, but we switched to a new textbook which is possibly the nerdiest, least undergrad-friendly text one could write, and it’s really kicking my ass.

Is there anyone more shameless in the eyes of those who have a conscience than someone who does not provide refuge for those who lack it, who does not, to the best of his abilities, comfort others or who takes the wealth of his subjects without thinking about them?

I saw the PARTCH Ensemble live twice and loved it! They play a custom 43-tone microtonal scale using hand-built instruments invented by Harry Partch. Experiencing these rare instruments in person is a mind-blowing acoustic and visual experience!

I tell people all the time that I got lucky with my career and it annoys a lot of them. "No, but you're good," they will say, and I will say, yes, I am good, and also here are all these people who write as well as I do but did not get the same break, so being good isn't the issue, being lucky is.
I am 90% sure my career wouldn't have happened if a couple people hadn't retweeted one of my stories the exact minute they did.

You work your hardest, but it's not in your hands. It breaks a lot of people.
My biggest frustration with writing is that quite often, the SWOOP that takes a book from midlist to BIG DEAL is pure luck, and I personally can't do anything to make it happen. Publishing is not a meritocracy. It's skill + time + luck, and all you can do is be in position for possible liftoff.

1) Composers almost never get the opportunity to write large orchestral works

2) If you're unfathomably lucky enough to get such an opportunity, it will almost certainly be performed once and only once

3) There is no mechanism in the orchestral community for building enduring repertoire
