I feel like we don’t talk about millennials in particular, hitting our 40s - in earlier generations many of us would be reaching the peak of our careers, but because of disaster after disaster, locust after locust eating our industries, many of us are on our 3rd or 4th fresh start.

Hot news for the sea lion in my comments bothering everyone about how training data is fair use

AI training of copyrighted material not fair use: Third Circuit
Using someone else's "creative spark" to start a competing business runs afoul of copyright law, the panel found.

This is a good illustration of how so much of AI theft isn't indirect (ie, data sucked into a model to train the chatbot) - it's actually **direct** copying, but *enabled* by GenAI.

Of course it is: chatbots absolutely suck at creating good, new stuff.

If you are friends with Lazulisong and want an invite to the discord server for finding ways to support her stroke recovery, send me a DM

Also it sounds like someone is going to make a GFM for her expenses like rent, I’ll share a link when one exists

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

There does seem to be an interesting subset of folks who seem huffily annoyed that creators might want to be compensated for their stolen work by the people whose intentional acts of theft has literally allowed to become billionaires, I mean, how dare we, right

The fucking anger I feel. Not even because of the merger or Newsom, but the fact that this piece of shit is just gonna fade into the background having made god knows how much money off of fucking over thousands of people the last 7 years.

When we enjoy art created by a person, we sit and ponder why they made it, what motivated them. It’s compelling and engages our own imaginations.

We don’t have these questions when AI generates a thing because we know there’s no motivation behind it. If there’s no motivation then what is the point?
Every time a discourse kicks off over whether AI music, literature or art will be "as good as" the real thing, I'm always amazed more people don't cite that **there already are** creative pursuits where human-free spectacles have been available for decades, and nobody has ever wanted to watch them.

is it mind-boggling? when anyone not lily-white and anglo-saxon might get beaten up and thrown into grey jails and sent to parts unknown???

what's mind-boggling is that anyone WANTS to visit
Visitors to the US are on track to drop by almost two million year-on-year.

“We’re the only major country in the world losing visitation,” the head of the US Travel Association said. “It’s mind-boggling.”

Whatever you feel about the MCU at this point, can we agree that the Avengers ensemble movies are the weakest ones

And I liked Cap 2 but at this point I am willing to assume that was all on the actors because the Russos simply cannot get it together since then without cringe
The Russo brothers say that one of the new scenes in Avengers: Endgame Encore is the most profound thing to ever happen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The only thing that will ever MAYBE deter a rapist is thinking they will be caught and punished harshly for doing it.

And even that is not enough to rely on. But it would be a good fucking start. Give all the entitled rich white boy rapists unavoidable jail time measured in years. They earned it.
Consent training isn’t going to stop a gang rape.

The first requirement of restorative justice is a perpetrator’s confession. He has to admit what he has done and to take accountability.

The men in this case are smearing the victim and threatening her with lawsuits. They are not candidates for RJ. They would turn it into a new site of violence.

I tell people before they start taking ADHD meds that day 1 will bring euphoria that will only last the one day, but the rage will still be there on day 2. Then they take them and go IS THIS REALLY HOW CALM AND FOCUSED AND EASY EVERYONE ELSE FEELS ALL THE TIME? Right on schedule
I had a diagnoses for over 15 years before I got prescribed stimulants and that first week was the first time I understood that other people can apparently think "I should bring this to the kitchen" and then they can get up and bring something to the kitchen.

just like that. like magic.
