This endorsement from Esther Perel of my upcoming book, Artificial Intimacy, means a great deal to me. She understands that the biggest questions about AI aren't technical but deeply human. Preorder now at www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/sherr....

On Democracy Now!, I floated a new theory: AI companies really have unleashed a killer monster that has slipped their control. But plot twist - the monster is human. And it's the President of the United States.

It's rad that Meta used a David Bowie song to advertise their AI and it's about how there are only five years before the apocalypse and they surely had no idea because these tech assholes have literally zero comprehension skills.

Got to hand it to them. Dumbest bunch of motherfuckers alive.

We've already seen that the recent calls by AI industry leaders to ‘pace the frontier’ are insufficient, and their suggestions that we must weaken antitrust protections in order to confront the AI threat are transparently self-serving.

Frontier AI models are currently a dangerous technology without the safeguards needed to protect people from serious harm.

That's why we should immediately pause the development of advanced AI while lawmakers and regulators put systems in place to keep people safe.

You know what we really need right now? The opinions of two guys who don’t know anything about AI and who have been wrong about many or all of the most consequential events of the past quarter century.

The future of artificial intelligence must be decided by the American people through their democratically elected representatives in government—not by a handful of CEOs and billionaire corporations.

And…Trump might be right! It is the job of the executive to enforce the law, including liability. In government, that means he might block this stunt if these guys realise they might go to jail. At Anthropic, that means it's Amodei's job to set priorities, eg more #devops fewer projects. #AILaunch

“AI will kill us all” is how the tech industry, especially rich people in it, avoid talking about real world problems—ones they’re causing, exacerbating, or neglecting—while still thinking themselves good.

“I’m better than all that,” they say. “I got high with my friends and BSed about the future.”

Good news everyone: AI is *not* going to kill us all!

But don't take my word for it -- I talked to (real) experts, and dug deep into the logic of an "AI apocalypse" and found it wanting.

That doesn't mean AI companies are off the hook, though.

"AI folks have spent a long time talking to one another, and their explanations not just for what they’re attempting to build but why they have to build it are layered, heavily contingent thought experiments, rich in metaphor, full of prediction, and articulated in terms of game theory."
