They could just… not do it. Or turn it off. Deploying AI tools in uncontrolled ways is a choice. The risks tech companies keep struggling to “manage” are risks they choose to create.

Banning "superintelligent" 🤢 AI plays right into industry rhetoric and keeps the focus off immediate, real world harms such as privacy, bias, and labor. Literally the same name of the silly Bostrom book everyone was reading 12 years ago.

if only ... it's just a subskeet about recent legislation to stop "AI superintelligence" ... which is not a thing. and won't do anything to stop data centers or other real-life consequences of rampant AI development.

Good news everyone: AI is *not* going to kill us all!
But don't take my word for it -- I talked to (real) experts, and dug deep into the logic of an "AI apocalypse" and found it wanting.
That doesn't mean AI companies are off the hook, though.

We've already seen that the recent calls by AI industry leaders to ‘pace the frontier’ are insufficient, and their suggestions that we must weaken antitrust protections in order to confront the AI threat are transparently self-serving.

We use the randomized lottery to break down the overall effect on US employment into part based on substitution (firms swapping natives & immigrants in the same role) versus scale (firms scaling up or down overall operations)
