Chatbots face scrutiny over persuasion

1h

Chatbots drew scrutiny over claims they may have feelings or consciousness and their potential to sway users with rapid, persuasive arguments, including false claims.

❤️ Late-night questions to AI about hearts

Across 109,017 chats about home ECG results, 60.01% came outside working hours and 57.90% of users lived in lower-tier cities. Questions drifted from meaning to next steps.

Many now notice people they know starting to sound--in person--like chatbots, speaking and reasoning in AI's stiffened tropes. I warned in The AI Mirror against becoming entranced and captivated by these mirror reflections of our aggregated minds. Worse is if we also begin to resemble them. 21/n

First caveat: the asbestos analogy does not apply to AI or machine learning generally, nor all AI uses. Not all AI/ML is GenAI, and AI does not equal 'chatbot' or even 'LLM'. If the analogy applies, its clearest application is to commercial GenAI chatbots used to automate cognitive tasks. 5/n

Fully human, I stand in awe of all minds--human and otherwise.

Also like doing science about them.

“That’s really interesting, Liz! Your contributions here are so thoughtful. Could you tell me more about why you hate active listening?”

Sorry, couldn’t resist. Happy Monday morning to you.

If you're not one of the people whose contributions are advancing [what I am accepting purely arguendo to be] this critically important conversation about that giant big fact... then "the AI conversation is happening there" doesn't seem like any kind of override to the "Nazi megaphone" problem.

I understand the claim "the rise of AI is also one of the biggest facts in the world."

Maybe there are 20 people whose conversations about AI are really critically important to that big fact. Maybe there are 200.

Either way, I'm sure they're all on a group chat already.

imo more than anything i think this is true in the sense that if you don't care about any non-AI/tech vertical, this is true

the problem, of course, is that Xitter isn't just a tech discussion forum

This is a use case for AI of which I heartily approve

AI Is Getting Really Good at Messing With Cybercriminals
Anti-cybercrime initiatives are increasingly using AI to scam the scammers by tricking them into talking to lifelike bots that they think are real victims.

Given Anthropic's huge user base, think of the good they could do simply by teaching users not to create abusive content toward their fellow humans, not simply toward their AI models!

🗣️ AI agents left to chat split into camps

In a simulation of thousands of chatbot agents, like-minded ones clustered together and their opinions drifted into polarised camps, much as in human networks.

Emergence of polarization in networks of large language model agents - Nature Communications

Some people seem to define “think” as intrinsically a human or animal activity, and recoil in horror when it’s used for machines. That baffles me. But I realized I do have an “ick” reflex when people use “he” or “she” for chatbots. If that’s how the anti-“think” people feel, I sympathize!
