This is an absurd prayer for relief. I've never seen anything like this. I don't even understand how you can ask for this, and I can't imagine this goes anywhere beyond creating confusion.

It's an extremely irresponsible action that further undermines the legitimacy of the Justice Department.
The lawsuit is signed by Andrew Darlington, who previously was director of Florida's "Office of Election Crimes and Security" and moved to DOJ early in 2025.

With this letter, the Trump Administration is demanding that California election officials voluntarily violate federal law enshrined by Congress.

Completely unacceptable and inappropriate for the feds to do — especially with their track record.

Citing no evidence nor is there any chance this is a credible lawsuit with zero chance of success. And yet the Times has to write it as this somehow being normal.

The Framers explicitly and carefully designed our judiciary as a check on violations of our rights by future, flawed people in the Executive branch.

This is their vision, working as intended.

(Congress was to partly serve the same purpose, which seems to have vanished in the mist.)
Last fall, DOJ's Civil Rights Division launched a series of lawsuits to obtain unredacted state voter rolls. A year later, DOJ has lost 26 of those cases in district court and won ... zero.
