One of the beauties of this new place is that I can share things from years ago again - this is probably the most popular tweet I’ve ever sent: a lockdown project that got out of hand. It now lives at the front of my classroom, students love it!

Georges Clemenceau born this day. Dominating presence in French politics in the late 19th and early 20th century. Initially on the sidelines criticizing the French government and war effort, after Allied disasters in 1917 France turned to him to lead.

#OTD in 1917, the 1er Zouaves assaults Mont Cornillet in Champagne. Pictured here are Zouaves assigned as brancardiers in the minutes prior to going over the top. The 1e RMZ's losses would be horrible over the next five days, losing 1,200 officers and men.

Pleased with this work. In 116 days covered by my analysis, 640 Ambulance Train loads took casualties from Third Battle of Ypres to the Base Hospitals. This equates to a total of somewhere in the region of 256000-384000 casualties. #WW1 #FWW #history #Ypres

In the same folder as the previous photo I posted (as it was the same trip), is a very dramatic picture of Thiepval Memorial. There are over 72,000 names on the memorial, which commemorates the Missing of the Somme.

I’ve driven Deborah II, the replica Deb, and I can tell you; being tank crew in the #FWW was a horrid job. Don’t get me wrong I had the best time filming the sequence - but after 3 mins the noise and smell of fumes was outrageous. Those guys really were brave.

Today's badge is a Blue Cross badge worn by horses, donkeys and mules on their bridles to show that they'd served in war and should be treated kindly. I rather like the phrase "I have done my bit". The Blue Cross is still going strong today. #WW1 #FWW

I've been able to hold a physical copy of my new book today.

It looks at the alleged disappearance of the 1/5th Battalion Norfolk Regiment at Kuchuk Anafarta Ova on 12th August 1915.

It's on sale now & I've left a link to where you can get a copy in the comments.

Today in 1918, at 9:30 am, 2nd Lt Paterson sends this message to the company commanders of the Artist's Rifles, a British infantry battalion on the frontline. 'Hostilities will cease at 11am today. Form up and march back...at once. Do not forget to bring the cookers with you' #ArmisticeDay #WW1 #FWW

Pilckem Ridge 2013. A support trench was found with dozens of shelters built along it. These were mostly on the enemy side and accessible via a short trench. The layout and dimensions were almost always identical.

When we discovered this German backpack in a 1914 trench near Wijdendrift (Langemark), we could never have imagined the extraordinary find it held. Only during cleaning in the depot did the eyes and claws of a cuddly toy come to light.

I was in York yesterday for a funeral. On my way back I spent a few minutes at the York Central War Memorial. These are just the names of the North Eastern Railwaymen who died in the Great War. Shattering stuff. A signal of catastrophe, of service, and profound sacrifice. #FWW #Memorials
