The UK Road Safety Strategy adopts a Safe System approach with a target of a 65% reduction in KSIs by 2035. With lower urban/village 20mph implicit within a Safe System culture they will become the norm in the UK. #20splenty is making our places fit for the 21st century.

Busy roads erode community ties – neighbours talk less, trust each other less, look out for each other less, and feel less ownership of shared spaces. #20splenty #CarsRuinCities

Whenever the call for 20mph as an urban/village norm with exceptions is made, some respond with "20mph should be just outside schools". But actually, all the evidence shows that it's everywhere else in communities that most child casualties occur. It's why #20splenty wherever people are!

"Some drivers will always object to community needs being placed above their own judgment. But the world has changed, and soon a 20mph speed limit will be the urban and village norm, making all of our places better places to be."

Time to remember that children don't just materialise near schools. If drivers think they do, that's because streets aren't safe for them to walk, scoot & cycle. ALL urban areas should be default 20.

In 2013 the UK Gov guidance on setting 20mph encouraged doing so on main roads. As progressive authorities across UK did so, it has built the evidence that 20mph main roads with previous higher speeds and pedestrian interactions record greater speed reductions and 25% casualty reductions. #20splenty

The Government in its Road Safety Strategy commits to reduce child road casualties by 70% by 2035. It also wants 60% of children walking or cycling to school by 2035. These won't be achieved if 30mph is kept as an urban/village norm. Our comment details why and how to deliver #20splenty nationally.
