#Adenovirus-based
Imagine if instead of making COVID isolation guidelines as weak as the flu...

We approved combo rapid tests like this and made them free and available for everyone...

So that people could tell how long they need to isolate based on science and not feelings, whatever the pathogen.

Fascinating and deeply satisfying resolution to why adenovirus-based vaccines produced blood clots in 1 out of 200,000 people.

Two factors interacted:
a mutation in an antibody gene + weak similarities between a viral protein & a human blood-clotting protein = induced clotting cascade.
Five years after the rollout of Covid-19 vaccines started, it seems the mystery of why the Astra-Zeneca and J&J vaccines led to a rare but deadly side effect of unusual blood clots and bleeding has finally been solved.

It's a fascinating case of molecular mimicry that may help make vaccine safer.🧪

Our public health agencies have been monitoring VAERS, and despite its extreme limitations were able to detect the incredibly rare 0.48/1000000 risk associated with the non-mRNA, adenovirus-vector-based J&J vaccine and pull it.

These vaccines have been tracked more than any intervention in history

"Although [adenovirus-based] COVID-19 vaccines are out of the picture... an adenovirus-based Ebola shot is on the market, and similar vaccines against other diseases are in development. The new data suggest they, too, could cause VITT, but they might be made safer by tinkering with the adenovirus."

Early, non-mRNA Covid vaccines from AstraZeneca and J&J had rare side effects--deadly blood clots and bleeding--that led to their discontinuance and fed anti-vaxx beliefs. Now researchers have ID'd the cause, which may make safer future vaxxes of this type, esp. a new Ebola vaccine.

Fascinating stuff - the conundrum of why, in extremely rare cases, people ended up getting dangerous blood clotting after having received the adenovirus-based J&J (my first COVID-19 vaccine; Ad26-based) or AstraZeneca (ChAdOx1-based) vaccines has been solved.

Brilliant work. This lethal side effect resulted from a confluence of bad luck-- for patients with a susceptible genetic background and prior adenoviral infection who received the adenovirus-based vaccine, and for creators of the vaccine who could not have anticipated cross-reactivity of pVII & PF4.

What this gives us is a clear explanation for why this clotting happened in some people and not most others. It also gives vaccine researchers a clearer target to avoid when designing future adenovirus-based vaccines.

So upset about the mischaracterization of the coronavirus though, ruining a great burn (it's not a DNA virus! not a retrovirus! the only people who got new DNA from it in their system got one of the adenovirus-based vaccines, and those were transient!)
