So here is a new rule I am going to implement, which is that if you reply to one of my comments (particularly one touching on social issues/politics) with a meme/image with text, and you don't also offer alt text describing the contents of the image, I'll hide your comment. Alt text matters, y'all.

This is a picture of a tiny bunny sitting on a patch of sidewalk. It is a perfectly round little sphere of fur, with only it's ears breaking the shape. Now that I have lured you in with the bunny photo, let me tell you why trans rights are equal rights... The concept of civil rights for protection is very old. The Magna Carta is often cited as the earliest documentation of rights claimed by the people, and it is said that the framers of the constitution used it as a foundation for the rights we have as citizens today. But even at the time they came up with the Bill of Rights, women had practically no direct rights, and certainly no direct influence on the governing of the country. Black people and others were used legally as slaves, so even though it said "We the People, it didn't mean ALL of the people. It was pushing 100 years between when the colonies split from England and when the Emancipation Proclamation freed the slaves. Even though the 15th amendment gave men of all races the right to vote, there were still so many barriers that it was only a token right for another 100 years. Too many people still think that blacks are inferior. Trans people are people. The fact that laws must be made to protect them shows that many people don't understand that. We live in an age of information, yet somehow (religion) many people seem to think that someone else is not as good because of their color, orientation, appearance, or other difference. But trans is not a performative thing, it is something that people experience. And when someone close to you experiences it, you either embrace them or throw them into the "strange" bin. But history has shown us that it "The vessel does not reveal the spirit within." So if they come for trans, they come for me. If they come for trans, they come for artists. They come for scientists, they come for writers and astronomers and service people and businesspeople and politicians and at some point they come for their own family. Sad.

Let’s talk about why that matters — and how to fix it. 🧵

Small emojis are used to highlight each point. 1. You’ve likely seen powerful letters from Treaty 6, 7, and 8 Nations. These statements reject Alberta’s separatist agenda and defend Indigenous sovereignty. They’re legal, constitutional, and historic. But if you only post the image, most people can’t actually read the words. 2. When there’s no alt text, the message becomes invisible to: 🧑‍🦯 People using screen readers 📱 Mobile users with accessibility settings 🌐 Anyone on slow data or using simplified browsers 🔍 Search engines — including Google and Bluesky’s own search Words matter. And they need to travel. 3. This is especially important because: 🔍 Full text in alt tags makes the content searchable — both in-platform and on the internet 📘 It helps students, journalists, and citizens find these letters in the future 🪶 It shows respect to the Nations who wrote them — ensuring their words reach everyone, not just those who can see the image 4. You can use ChatGPT or similar tools to extract the full, verbatim text from the image. ✅ Ask for “full text” — not just an “alt tag” ✅ That way, you can reuse it for both the alt field and your post caption if needed 5. These words need to spread. They need to be readable, findable, and remembered. Alt text ensures that Treaty rights, Indigenous sovereignty, and constitutional truth aren’t buried in pixels — they live, breathe, and travel.
