~98% of lichens are Ascomycetes, producing small cups as the spore producing structure, but there are a number of lichenized Basidiomycetes like these gorgeous Lichenomphalia!

8) Sexual structures are fungal and are largely dependent on what kind of fungus is involved. Most lichens contain Ascomycetes (sack fungi) but some have Basidiomycetes (club fungi). They look weird! Just look at this moist nightmare

Most fungi are either ascomycetes (truffles, morels, Cordyceps) or basidiomycetes. Basidiomycetes have three branches: smuts (corn smut), rusts (mostly orange plant parasites), and the branch containing "mushrooms," puffballs, crusts, polypores, etc
