#BoatFamilies
Bliss. Husband left yesterday for a week long Scout camp. Son left this morning for a 3 day trip with his girlfriend.
I am all alone in the house!!
Music on, chocolate & snacks at hand, ready meals for dinner. Time to deal with the Whitehouse #BoatFamilies 💪 #OnePlaceStudies

Absolutely fascinating. A glimpse into the lives of the men and women I'm researching, and their way of life on the canal. And Buckby gets a mention, named as Bugby, one of the stabling points!

Two brothers married two sisters, 6 years apart, same church. Each couple had 10 children in the same 2 places.
12 children correctly assigned so far, 8 to go! Both families are missing from the same Census which is not helping.

Yesterday I came across an interesting pronunciation challenge. It 'looks' like COLCLOUGH may have sounded like COKLEY (Staffs 1800s). Going to need more research to confirm but more of my #BoatFamilies may have just connected together! #OnePlaceStudies

Charles Pilgrim, a man of many names, and even more convictions. Boatman, baker, carter, horse dealer, and thief.

#BoatFamilies and the First World War - finding these young men who served is proving difficult but so far I have found 20 young men who made the ultimate sacrifice. Their stories will be told, for now I'm just remembering their names. #OnePlaceStudies #RemembranceSunday

I thought I'd have a quick look at the Dickens #BoatFamilies... Let's just say that trying to search newspapers for Charles Dickens was a mistake 🤣 #OnePlaceStudies

Promising new DNA match. Can't yet work out where in my tree he connects but he does join up at least 3 of my #BoatFamilies ! Wasn't expecting my DNA test to help with the boat families research😮(I am descended from boat people & connected via marriage to a lot but still)

#OnePlaceWednesday Today I'm working on #BoatFamilies, filling in some gaps and joining families together. Slowly but surely they're all connecting into one huge family!

The boatmen who died were:
captain Charles Bexon born c1832 Loughborough, married with children
William Taylor born c1840, not married
Jonathan Holloway born 1856 Oldbury, not married. Jonathan was identified from a photo by his family some days later.

At 4:55 am, on 2nd October 1874, a convoy of five barges carrying gunpowder exploded beneath the Macclesfield Bridge in Regent's Park. The explosion was so powerful that three men died, a boat's keel landed on a house 300 yards away, and animal cages at the zoo were damaged.

I'm going to make the effort to actually write something this week for #BoatFamilies. The website is coming along, nearly there... #OnePlaceWednesday

Oops I've just achieved research overload. Spent 2 weeks looking for #BoatFamilies which means looking a lot of records to find the right people. Turns out FindMyPast have a monthly limit😱 Luckily it's not too long to wait for the end of the month!

#OnePlaceWednesday Today's fun is untangling the mess I created yesterday by researching 1 chap from #LongBuckbyWharf. One man leads to 7 different #BoatFamilies and another connection to a Wharf person. And 3 of those boat families are already in my tree. Time to join them all up!

🤣 that sounds like me researching #BoatFamilies!

#OnePlaceWednesday Using various convoluted methods I've found around 70 men from #BoatFamilies who served in WW1. I think it's time for a spreadsheet, for analysis & for a research log. Should I have started the spreadsheet at the beginning of my research? - yes, shush!

#GenHour Finding #BoatFamilies WW1 men is down to luck and chance, this article from 1940 was enough for me to find Oliver Jones. Very unlikely I'd have found him otherwise as no service record survives.
#OnePlaceStudies Sometimes finding my #BoatFamilies WW1 men looks like this⬇️
There is actually enough here for me to be able to find and name him - Oliver Jones b1893, KIA 24 July 1916. Remembered at Thiepval.

#OnePlaceWednesday #BoatFamilies I'm using the amazing report ability of FamilyHistorian to help with research. These Roberts are currently 6 distinct family groups - I doubt that. I can also see how many baptisms and deaths I'm missing🤦‍♀️

As today is fuelled by migraine meds (ie I'm off my trolley!) I am rewatching Robbie Cumming's Canal Boat Diaries before the new series starts. And making copious notes on the places, canal arms, industries etc he mentions. Cheers Robbie, all useful for my #BoatFamilies #OnePlaceStudy !

Excellent. To add to my John Jones boatmen, I now have a William Williams. And of course they're mostly based in Cheshire. Think I might just ignore that one for a while😂 #OnePlaceStudies #BoatFamilies

Staffordshire Archives have a huge amount of oral recordings of #BoatFamilies. Finding out how to access those is on my list of things to do...

#OnePlaceWednesday The work of creating a new website is underway - #BoatFamilies of the Grand Junction Canal is coming soon!
June 4, 2025 at 8:41 AM
Welcome to #BoatFamilies research 😆 I recommend working them out on paper first before you commit to the tree, it's going to get messy! (you will regularly be heard muttering 'you've got to be joking' and 'oh no, not again'!)

#OnePlaceStudies Some lovely media has been added to my #BoatFamilies site. Click on Albums rather than all media & then it's easier to see the collections. 30 years of marriages at Braunston have just been added today :)
