Republican Candidate Faces Scrutiny Over Child Labor Violations and Workplace Safety Concerns
A Republican candidate running for the U.S. House in Washington's 3rd District is under scrutiny for his family-owned company's labor practices, including child labor violations and workplace safety issues. John Braun, a state senator challenging Democratic incumbent Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, is president of Braun Northwest, a company founded by his parents 40 years ago. According to the Washington Post, state regulators fined the company over $2,000 last year for three child labor violations involving two teenage apprentices. One 17-year-old apprentice was injured when her glove got caught in a drill press, which state rules prohibit minors from operating without a barrier guard. Another teen was using a hammer drill to install outlets in ambulances, and a third youth was allowed to work more than eight-hour days seven times during a week off from school. Colten Keller, a former employee who worked at the company from 2023 to 2025, reported safety concerns before his father, Karl Keller II, was killed on the job in August 2024. OSHA records indicate that Karl Keller was beneath a finished ambulance when a coworker accidentally drove the vehicle over him. Keller stated that company leadership focused on safety within their departments but adopted a 'not my monkey, not my circus' attitude when issues arose elsewhere. Keller left the company in May 2025 after repeatedly requesting not to work with the employee responsible for his father's death. He later appeared in a campaign ad for Gluesenkamp Perez, stating that Braun 'never called' after his father's death. Braun claimed he spoke to Keller twice the day of the incident, provided paid time off, and delivered a homemade meal. A former welder who left in 2013 described safety practices as 'pretty lax,' noting workers sometimes stood on pallets hoisted by forklifts to reach high shelves, a practice OSHA warns against. Braun denied this practice occurred, stating the company has no record of penalties for it. He also called the child labor citations an 'anomaly' and described the teen's injury as 'not a particularly serious accident,' adding that the company discontinued its apprenticeship program due to a 'heavy-handed regulatory approach.' The injured teen, now 19, told the Post that the accident was 'nothing but my own fault.' Braun maintained in a recent debate that 'simply doesn't happen,' and that he had 'nothing to be ashamed of in terms of our business record or our safety record.'

64 additional minors enrolled in BARMM's child labor rehabilitation program
The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) has expanded its anti-child labor initiative, with 64 more minors now benefiting from the Bangsamoro Child Labor Sagip Program (BCLSP). The program, implemented by the Ministry of Labor and Employment-BARMM (MoLE-BARMM), provides school supplies worth P5,000 and P15,000 cash assistance to rescued child laborers. The beneficiaries, aged between 10 and 17, come from poor families in four towns of Maguindanao del Sur and two municipalities in the Special Geographic Area (SGA) of Cotabato province. The recent distribution took place on October 8-9, covering South Upi, Datu Anggal Midtimbang, Datu Saudi Ampatuan, Guindulungan, Old Kaabakan, and Kadayangan. This follows a previous distribution on October 5, where 121 former child laborers received similar benefits. The program has rehabilitated 3,781 child laborers over the past three years, reintegrating them into government schools across BARMM's five provinces and three cities. Local leaders, including Maguindanao del Norte Vice Governor Marshall Sinsuat, have expressed support for the program and are considering provincial ordinances to strengthen its enforcement. The MoLE-BARMM, led by Muslimin Sema and Bai Sara Jane Sinsuat, continues to coordinate with regional agencies to ensure the program's success, with hopes that newly-elected BARMM parliament members will further support these efforts.

Washington Post recommends you boycott palm oil this Halloween
A Washington Post interview with an economist and expert said that wise consumers should boycott palm oil this Halloween. Instead you should take a second look at what you buy, eat and distribute on Halloween. Two main ingredients in candy are leading to human rights abuses, deforestation and child slavery. Below you will find ways to boycott palm oil this Halloween and the reasons why this is a good idea. While chocolate is a crowd-pleaser, the ubiquitous candy “has some pretty close associations with two of the biggest environmental crises that we face right now, and that’s the climate crisis and the biodiversity crisis,” says John Buchanan, vice president of sustainable production for Conservation International.

Children in Coastal Areas Dropping Out of School Due to Climate Change; Disasters Disrupt Education, Increasing Child Labor
At an age when Durjoy Sana should be going to school with books and notebooks, he is instead catching crabs and fish in the rivers of the Sundarbans. On some days during high tide, he earns Tk 500–600; on other days during low tide, he returns home empty-handed. The child, from Mathurapur Jelepara (fishing community) in Shyamnagar, Satkhira, dropped out of school while in third grade. Now, like his father and grandfather, the Sundarbans is his workplace. The story of Durjoy’s older brother, Joy Sana, is even more tragic. He had to leave school while studying in eighth grade at Banshree Shiksha Niketan. His family says he became mentally distressed after being beaten and humiliated by teachers for failing to keep up with his studies. At one point, Joy even attempted suicide. Now both brothers work with their family in fishing. The stories of Durjoy and Joy are not isolated incidents. The communities in remote areas of Shyamnagar, Munshiganj and Ashashuni in Satkhira, near the Sundarbans, are repeatedly affected by frequent cyclones, tidal surges and floods caused or intensified by climate change. Many families lose their homes and livelihoods and become poorer. And that pressure ultimately falls on children’s education...

This is what capitalism looks like!

Capitalism is NOT "the best system we got", just because capitalists spread enough propaganda to make people believe it is.

Behind some of the world's gold are children paying a price no child should ever pay. Kids as young as 9 are reportedly working 10 to 15 hours a day in Venezuela's gold mines, facing mercury poisoning, tunnel collapses, and gang violence. https://ow.ly/xgmt50ZSnUx #ChildLabor

With U.S. support, traders arrived and cut deals. That investment has so far failed to improve the bleak conditions in the mining industry.

Remember this spot when it was empty? Now it's a functioning village. The goal: help children escape illegal labor on cacao farms. If you eat chocolate, you might be unknowingly complicit in the exploitation of over 1.5 million children in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. #ethicalchocolate #childlabor

Big chocolate profits often come at the cost of child labor. Companies could easily implement fair practices, like ensuring farmers receive a living wage and auditing for child labor. Community development projects also make a difference. It doesn't have to be this way. #fairtrade #childlabor
