Kijk eens wat een mooie sieralg 🤩
#Micrasterias furcata #Desmid

Ik was voor een project nabij #Bordeaux en daar konden we een paar vennen bemonsteren.

Deze soort heeft een Atlantische verspreiding en wordt in NL zelden aangetroffen.

Nice! I particularly enjoyed this one from the same collection (specialcollectionsarchive.exeter.ac.uk/collections/...), with the typo in the caption:

"T. olor is now Lacrymaria olor Müller, a ciliated protest."
(also featuring a desmid and a rotifer)

Visited a Sphagnum bog this week - there to look at the bryophytes but also fun to check in on the desmid algae situation! These tiny green jewels were hiding in submerged Sphagnum cuspidatum

Looking through an old pond sample I came across this now empty valve (shell) of the desmid Micrasterias. These snowflake shaped cells are some of my all time favorites. This one also shows there is also beauty in death in the microworld.

Additionally in the bog: Bog Pondweed, Potamogeton polygonifolius (first two images) and within the water the very common desmid Euastrum binale gutwinskii, identified with the 4th photo 📚. I've found it in virtually every acidic body of water I've ever looked at under the microscope. 🔬

Another algivorous (eats algae) amoeba in my 1879 first edition copy of the landmark monograph Fresh-water Rhizopods of North America by paleontologist Joseph Leidy. Amoeba have been around for hundreds of millions of years so I bet their ancestors that outlast our species will disagree. 🦠

When a Micrasterias divides, each half grows a brand new matching semicell to replace the one it left behind.

Alongside them is a Closterium, another desmid, but elongated and curved like a crescent moon.

The stars of the show are Micrasterias, a genus of desmid, single-celled green algae built like tiny symmetrical snowflakes. Each cell is split into two mirror-image halves called semicells, connected at a narrow waist.

One of my favorite things to view under the #microscope - Micrasterieas a beautiful desmid with stunning symmetry --- my middle schoolers have dubbed it the "Green Snowflake" for good reason, I think! And in this clip, a "MicroMonster pays a visit!

I knew a scientist couple in the Bay Area who named their daughter Desmid. Pretty sure she was known as Dezzy.

Seasonal desiccation of mountain bog pools in the Ore Mts, Czech Republic, is caused by high summer temperatures and changing precipitation patterns. We have shown that this is a key stressing factor for desmid microbiota in phytobenthic communities. preslia.cz/doi/preslia....

I am on bluesky deciding what amazing plankton photo to post, instead of making roast chicken for dinner. Oh well! :)

Here are some Closterium green algae (Zygnematales, desmids) having a social get together in a water drop from pond on Sourland Mountain, NJ, 12 April 2021 (own photo). #locallife
