I’ve been a FESAC fan for awhile. It advises Census, Bureau of Economic Analysis, and Bureau of Labor Statistics on a range of measurement issues. I even got to present once there on residual seasonality in GDP (remember when that was a concern?)

Reduced transparency in is perhaps the most troubling aspect of disbanding FESAC. Cutting off agency staff from external advisers creates an environment where political interference could occur much more easily — and go undetected.

And FESAC is not alone. By executive order, the administration is ending several advisory committees in the federal government, reducing transparency and the technical resources for agencies. It’s a short-sighted approach that could undermine essential government services.

Disbanding FESAC isn’t about greater efficiency. In 2024, the committee's cost was expected to be a modest $120,000, covering travel expenses and staff support. Committee is unpaid. The benefits to the millions of data users from regular reviews by external experts far exceed that negligible cost.

In addition to FESAC, the terminated committees include the BEA Advisory Committee, the 2030 Census Advisory Committee, the Census Scientific Advisory Committee and the National Advisory Committee. The BLS committees appear to be in suspended animation, but haven't yet been formally terminated.
