#HistBookChat offering for the week is more of a display of books on my new rotating book tower. Nowhere near enough room for them all but it's a good start and I have been able to rescue several titles from being stored under the bed!

Just finished rereading "Fortune's Bazaar: The Making of Hong Kong" by Vaudine England. I was so delighted how it captured the essence of the city, I had to buy my own copy. This is the story of the mixed-race, "in-between" Hongkongers that made the city thrive.

So next after Grant's Memoirs, I'm looking forward to reading about Varney's arguments in this book about Grant's efforts to use history to undermine Rosecrans and provide cover for Grant.

Having been fortunate enough to have had a bit of a financial windfall recently, I was really pleased to fill in a massive gap in my 'War in the Pacific' bookshelves.

Despite being continuously fascinated by the #USMC (you should see my GWOT bookshelf), they're...

different. I'm not done with the book yet, and it's interesting to read it side by side with Harrison and Nolan, and we'll see how it winds up as we get further into the battle.

I recently finished Havana Nocturne by TJ English. This is one of the best books I have read in 2026. If you like to read about organized crime, the 1950s, or Cuban History, then this is a book you will want to check out.

Received this book for review for @tracesofwar.bsky.social very curious to see if the focus on infrastructure has led to new insights. Hopefully the review will be online in December or January... #histbookchat

Post note after the full 450 pages: My sceptical approach was completely unfunded, this is an excellent read and highly educational.
Now I understand why it is quoted so many times as the standard work for the French campaign 1940.
Recommended to everyone who likes some myth busting.

It’s a post Napoleonic War-ish book that’s arrived. The Allied armies don’t go home upon the 2nd Bourbon restoration. @beatricedegraaf.bsky.social has made me think about the post war diplomatic & security environment so hopefully this tells me about the ‘occupation’ of France. 🇫🇷 🇪🇺 📚 #histbookchat

Just finished Havana Nocturne by T.J. English, and I found it hard not to get caught up in this slice of history. I’ve always been drawn to stories about organized crime, and the way the American mob turned Havana into a playground of casinos, nightlife, and corruption.
