What happens to asteroid impact debris after it lands? ☄️

PSI's Kirby Runyon used a miniature catapult aboard a reduced-gravity airplane to find out!

Wrapping up a great few days of #fieldwork in eastern #Quebec at a potential new meteorite impact crater. Stay tuned for details of what we found - hint: the brutal field conditions were worth it 😉 #geology #impactcraters #fieldwork #science

In addition to the conference field trip, I also have a field research team here at the Ries crater, focusing on the post-impact hydrothermal alteration story #ImpactEarth #ImpactCraters @westernuspace.bsky.social @westernuearth.bsky.social

What a great day yesterday: down to the floor of Meteor Crater and then around the rim. It’s always a privilege to bring students to this amazing place #ps9605 #fieldschool #impactcraters #planetarygeology

Good to be back in Sudbury to teach my impact cratering short course and field school. What better place to teach than a 200 km diameter meteorite impact structure! #impactcraters #SudburyImpact #Apollo #Artemis @westernu.ca

Another great day at the Ries crater and our final one as a group before a few of the team leave tomorrow. More great rocks, discussions about the #ExoMars mission & checking out the historic town of Nördlingen! #geology #fieldwork #mars #impactcraters

The enigmatic Stac Fada Member of the Torridonian Supergroup. Formed approximately 1 billion years ago by meteorite impact, but lots of unknowns. Where is the crater? Why so much glass and accretionary lapilli, and so little shocked material? #geology #impactcraters #scottishhighlands #outdoors

Québec has some other #ImpactCraters that are more obvious than this one.

Manicouagan Reservoir is an annular lake created 214 million years ago by the impact of a #meteorite 5 km in diameter.

There's also the Pingualuit #ImpactCrater on the Ungava Peninsula.
