Babies learn a lot in their first year, but not in a straight line. Our new study shows that babies can learn patterns in speech as early as 4 months old. But across development, how they show that learning changes.

Babies learn a lot in their first year. But their behaviour doesn’t always tell the full story
If a baby doesn’t show a clear response at a particular age, it does not necessarily mean they have stopped learning or missed an important step.

👶 Why does everyone rub a crying baby's BACK, not the head or belly?

Toho University tested real infants: only the back calms them. In mice, the response isn't inborn—it's built by a mother's early touch. Magic speed? 10 cm/sec.
