Horror Neurobiology (WATCHING SCARY STUFF) with Dr. Austin Lim — alie ward
Thrills. Chills. Hiding behind your hands. It’s officially SPOOKTOBER month with a huge, fascinating (and I promise, mellow) episode on why humans watch horror, and what’s happening in your brain. Not...

I'm aware that neurobiology goes way beyond what most people in computer science think it does: it's still not a good sign in terms of default ethical positions though

Yes!!! 1998-2000 getting my masters in neurobiology. I also smoked back then so I was effectively even poorer

The field of mathematics is being devastated in front of our eyes.

For neuroscience, experimentalists may be safe, but how long until the AI-research wave takes over our computational/theoretical neuroscience?

Is there any reason they can't? They can code, they can do maths. They know neurobiology

You don't need to understand the neurobiology to benefit from it. You just need to be deliberate about what you repeat, because your brain is going to rebuild itself around it either way.

Well these days we don't consider it magic, we call it neurobiology. But it's definitely something digital LLM chatbots don't have!

well, a statue which would occasionally undergo relevant processes (whether computationalist, if you are a computationalist, or materialist-noncomputational if you are like, mag-consciousness theorist or we) would not be a conventionally understood statue, but in a sense our own neurobiology is >

You dismissed the relevance of the scientific knowledge we have of how the brain works in the context of philosophy

It’s not about ego or eduction or weather it’s yours or someone else’s. Do you dismiss neurobiology in the context of answering questions about the mind?
I have read a couple and taken course (including one grad course).

However that is irrelevant because we are arguing philosophy here. You are arguing that LLMs and humans are of the same category, a statistical model, as a basis for an unfalsifiable claim, that LLMs may be conscious.

We have an all-girl graduate student cohort IN #cogsci this year. I interrupted their chat about plant neurobiology. My kind of gals. I have great hopes and pride and a covert intention of converting them to molds and fungi.

I would have been a doctor. Ironically, I still did go down that path when I went to school for brain science. Both psychology and neurobiology. But since I was more interested in medical research than medical practice, I quickly changed gears when I learnt the hard way I’d experiment on animals.
