LLMs have been extremely helpful in various behind-the-scenes, producer-side economic activity, especially within infotech, but quite frankly all the consumer-facing stuff is "kinda novel" at best and "destroyer of civilizations" at worst.

Through direct abuse and neglect alike, the US government has thoroughly failed to set effective and reasonable ground rules for the infotech playing field.
The result is that infotech gets dominated by Big Men who can use influence to protect their subordinate techies. This is *horrible*.

I think generative AI could've been built and deployed to minimal fanfare and disruption to society, but instead the entire infotech industry decided it was the thing that would save it from irrelevance, and now it's been pushed everywhere.

The thing about gaslighting specifically is that it was very clearly a classic power move against someone gullible or isolated that human beings employed all the time, casually.
