“The moment calls for more than traditional institutionalism. We are past due for an infusion of a new kind of institutionalism—a forward leaning variety that speaks to the moment and takes the challenge Donald Trump brings to the rule of law head on.” open.substack.com/pub/joycevan...
Jack Smith's Report & Beyond
We’ve now seen Volume 1 of Jack Smith’s report, released just after midnight when Judge Aileen Cannon’s order prohibiting DOJ from making it public lapsed.

institutionalism is dumb when the institutions are broken
Which one do you have a problem with? Biden is an institutionalist who does not believe the DOJ should be manipulated. He maybe too good for the times, but we should all hope we can get back to a time when people like him run our government.

What’s this institutionalism that can constrain authoritarianism but not - sorry, checking my reference materials here — very very mild democratic socialism?

I will say what Trump is doing is an example of how to get shit done quick in DC. rather than Dems and their plodding institutionalism, following all the self-imposed procedures, trying to lawsuit proof everything, and compulsively dithering in general, you just blitz hard right out of the gate

Honestly, Biden’s pardon of his son is the break from institutionalism that the Democrats need.
The institutions are already repressing free speech, free trade, freedom of religion and bodily freedom. It’s going to get worse. The Dems better get over their love affair with the institutions.

I wrote about the Bari Weiss take over of CBS News as part of a broader trend away from the pretense of liberal institutionalism into a genuinely post-reality tabloidism, marked by AI slop, unsophisticated Trumpian-Likudite propaganda and consolidation of traditional and social media.

Farage is consolidating a reactionary populist coalition organised around grievance identity, anti-institutionalism, and episodic conspiracism, closely mirroring the structural dynamics of MAGA while adapting them to UK political culture. And look how that worked out for America.
99 per cent of analysis I’m reading about Zahawi is way too involved. To the extent people pay attention to this at all, it will be to note that Reform are doing well and hear someone else say Farage will/can be PM. Also: are Reform the same old Tories or something new and scary?
