"we had layaways instead of klarna" oh wow that's so cool that you had paying in installments back then rather than paying in installments like we have today.

like that's clearly not sustainable mr klarna

“can i pay in installments?” do i look like klarna?

For my last Buying Power of the year, I wrote about one way to think about the divergence in consumer sentiment (bad) and behavior (free-spending) this year: It’s the YOLO economy, typified by the expanding popularity of services like Klarna and Affirm. Gift link: www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Want to understand the state of the economy? Just look to all the shoppers flocking to “buy now, pay later” services.

I like Denny’s because they let you pay in installments with Klarna

Danna, you’re moving from a place of doubt. Who did this to you, an absent parent? Yeah, I can tell. I was once just like you, thinking I wasn’t good enough to klarna first class flights to the Texaspalooza Executive Circle Leadership Summit. I let doubt put a ceiling on my belief.

As I said in yesterday's post - some companies, like Klarna, that laid off a lot of people for AI are now rehiring them.

And that's customer service, which is a relatively routine administrative job compared to others.
Basically most ‘AI will take your job’ stuff fundamentally misunderstand what ‘your job’ actually involves or where people add value. It’s the same as people who think a software engineer ‘generates code’ or a writer ‘generates lots of words’.
The copywriter brief for AI is hilarious. He wouldn’t ask it to create ‘good copy’ cause that’s too vague. But would ask it to create a ‘lead magnet’ and ‘complete landing page’.

This is someone who has no idea how much creativity goes into creating content for a website or marketing campaign.

GenAI has never saved anyone any money, nor made them more productive. Companies like Klarna and Duolingo are hiring back the people they laid off in their AI fever; others are hiring expensive consultants to patch up AI botch jobs.

But sure, EA will be the first ever company to make it work.

Also Arby's: We accept Klarna or you can talk to one of our loan officers if you would like to finance the curly fries and jalapeno poppers.

That and getting Klarna/Afterpay/etc. accounts with $5000 introductory spending limits, sending one another invoices for the full $5000, cashing it out, and then acting like they tricked somebody.
Wait... They're back on that again?!

And if investors view Klarna as an "AI company" not a "buy now pay later company" the valuation will be like 10x higher

This is the game

Klarna is playing it brilliantly, all the while people think they figured out how to replace people with AI (which is not the case)

Stock price surges like this are telling.

Klarna is a buy now pay later lender. These kind of loans are now being counted on your credit score as bad, risky use of credit.

Don’t use them. This is just another way to get the poor even further in debt. www.businessinsider.com/klarna-ipo-s...
Klarna stock surges 30% as investors flock to another hot tech debut
Klarna is the latest in a line of hugely anticipated tech IPOs to surge in their first day of trading, jumping more than 30% Wednesday afternoon.

Klarna admits AI isn’t as good as human workers, but this story suggests it’s “hiring” two types of human customer support now: freelancers or an “Uber type of setup.”

It sounds like the AI strategy served its purpose after all: to turn employees into contractors.
As Klarna flips from AI-first to hiring people again, a new landmark survey reveals most AI projects fail to deliver
Just 1 in 4 AI investments bring in the ROI they promise—but CEOs just can’t resist the technology.

Klarna? The "would you like to finance your lunch salad over 18 equal payments" guys?

Look, there are real financial issues in Gen Z, like predatory new financial instruments Afterpay / Klarna. The once a week pastry is not it!! $6 for coffee once a week is not rent.
“At the same time, more than half of Gen Z members say they are struggling to make ends meet, yet a majority buy themselves a small treat, such as a pastry, coffee, or sweet, at least once a week. That can lead to overspending…”

Apple is partnering with Klarna to launch a leasing program for its devices.

The program, which they're calling Apple Upgrade, will lease most iPhone, Mac, iPad and Apple Watches to people.

Apple Upgrade will work like a subscription model, and launches a week from today.

Afterpay, Klarna, etc. are your enemies. Please pretend that these companies do not exist. Their entire business model is that they hope you’re late on your payments and the interest you have to pay is substantial (~35%). They make credit card companies look like saints in comparison.
