Yes MODFLOW is still a thing, just not at the 100 level.

Hoping to integrate two surface models (SWMM and HEC-RAS) into a 300 level course in the spring.

Pro tip, when Googling 'SWMM models" you will not get hydrology content

Hydrology Paper of the Day @rcollenteur.bsky.social on groundwater models, hydraulic head, and how nonlinear time series mathematics reacts to synthetic data: a homogeneous aquifer bounded by two parallel canals as the model domain; soils, evaporation and application of MODFLOW; and approximations.

Is modflow still a thing?
November 22, 2024 at 2:04 AM
Wow, how do you know about modflow?
November 22, 2024 at 2:07 AM
These feel like when early versions of MODFLOW blew up because you made a mistake setting up the model.

Of course, you may not know that until you came back from the weekend and the 486 was smoking and blinking from the 40 hours of #crunching.

In the grad course he set us up with like 20 meg of space on the mainframe to run Modflow. I used most of that space to save swimsuit photos from FTP.

That's probably a good idea. I only had some Modflow and some really basic Hardy-Cross calculations in undergrad. But I was still amazed at how simplistic the models were in real life, and how puzzled people were when I told them I'd need tons of real life data to calibrate the models I made.

Paper alert! 🚨
Happy to share that our paper "Modelling Groundwater Hydrological Drought and Its Recovery Given Natural and Anthropogenic Scenarios in South America" was recently published in the Journal Hydrological Processes: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...
Modelling Groundwater Hydrological Drought and Its Recovery Given Natural and Anthropogenic Scenarios in South America
This study focuses on model choice and scenario comparison, contrasting the coupled and non-coupled versions of PCR-GLOBWB2.0 with MODFLOW. Though a natural and anthropogenic scenario, we aim to comp...

Integrated Subsurface Hydrologic Modeling for Agricultural Management Using HYDRUS and UZF Package Coupled with MODFLOW
The present work aims to compare two different subsurface hydrological models, namely HYDRUS and MODFLOW UZF package, in terms of groundwater recharge; thus, both models were coupled with MODFLOW. The...

History, eh?
When I was working at ISU the people I collaborated with were starting to integrate MODFLOW with SWAT (which is a process based surface water model), it has been years since I have worked on that stuff!

Discover how the LSPC modeling framework is reshaping our understanding of river flow by accounting for both natural conditions and human impacts in California's watersheds.

Presenters explain how LSPC models natural, reservoir and groundwater impacts on river flows
In a technical Q&A, presenters said LSPC estimates "natural" flow by modeling watershed hydrology while explicitly including human impacts (diversions, reservoirs); they described reservoir modules, optional coupling with MODFLOW for groundwater, and plans to recalibrate when new data arrive.

It is sad to hear about Prof. Sueli Pereira's ( #Unicamp ) passing. I studied #Hydrogeology with her in 2006, first time I used MODFLOW. She was very kind and well-spirited. When I came to Canada, she sent me her best wishes. My sympathies to her relatives and friends.
